Yes and no. Look at the serieses you mentioned like this:

Castle
-> Golden Age, 8 (14) years of several lines, each year several sets of each line.
-> Dragon Masters, 1 year (1993)
-> Royal Knights, 1 year (1995)
-> ...

Adventurers
-> Egypt, 1 year (1998)
-> Amazonas, 1 year (1999)
-> Dino Island, 1 year (2001)
-> Orient, 1 year (2003)

Alphateam
-> First line (no idea how it's called), 1 year (2001)
-> Mission Deep Sea, 1 year (2002)
-> Arctic, 1 year (2004)

That's the difference: There is one theme a year rather than several years with mixed themes like it used to be in the "Golden Age".

I mean, how many large scale Ninja, Western, Islanders, Rock Raiders, Blacktron II, Alpha Team, Adventures etc... MOCs do we see? Most people don't have the money or commitment to invest in a theme which is going to be dropped within a year or two.
I've done (what I consider) large scale MOCs for both Adventurers and Wild West themes. Maybe not all that large in scale but large in scope. I built a small western town for Tull in my Brick Tower Project. And AJoT had a lot of landscape. But I guess nothing really spectacular. Nothing in the scale of some of the impressive stuff I've seen around here. So I kind of see what you mean.

I only have one islander figure, and I love it. It's the female fig wearing a grass skirt and a lei (and she's got some ample cleavage... ooh la la!). I used her head (since it was androgynous) for a mime figure. Anyway, I would love to collect a bunch of them to make some sort of warrior tribe.

I love the painted faces. I've used them in my acrobats (scroll down).

Hmmm. Your not the only one. It seems that Dr. Carney is also a fan of the Islander faces. http://12.223.136.182/hedingham/greathall2.jpg

Yeah, I certainly can't claim originality. I've seen those used for mimes/clowns/jesters by several builders.

I loved the Islander sets...I only had one though...I had an idea to make an entire island...but with the color change it is impossible...

In the end the line was cut short...but for once there were female minifigures...that was amazing...

The Islanders could be implemented into many themes...in many ways...Town...Castle...Adventurers...Viking...if only LEGO could expand onto the theme...but the art of piracy is dead...and now we must settle for...4+ Pirates...
