Here are some suggestions, in order of importance/rank as far as I know, could be wrong, can be changed. These are just terms I found while browsing the web.

Serf
Laborer
Citizen
Tax-Collector (probably ranks higher, but you know... ;))
Artisan
Merchant
Reeve
Bailiff
Steward
Landlord
Squire
Aristocrat
Councilman
Magnate
Sub-lord
Knight
Noble

It depends... If we go with a more economic/everyday life ranking system, Anthony's system is good. But if we go for military rankings, Blasterman's is better...

We are working on a system at CC to tell you how many posts that you have. It is still under development.

0-50 posts - Gong Farmer
50-100 posts - Peasant
100+ posts - Villein

We will eventually add categories for people with more posts.
Hi Ben,

Here are some other categories, loosely sorted (and some repetition from other list submissions):

Starting on the land:
Gong farmer
Serf
Villein
Freeman/Yeoman

Sidestepping to the town (commercial):
Labourer
Apprentice
Master/Guildsman
Merchant

Town (political):
Bailiff
Sherriff
Councillor
Reeve

Town (ecclessiastical):
Monk/Nun
Prior/Prioress
Priest
Abbott/Abbess

Back to the land:
Landlord
etc

Military:
others have already done this one

Nobility:
see Military

So it looks like you admins have got your hands full ;)

This is a neat idea, and I wish you success in developing a system that is fun and informative. Thanks for letting us give input.

Alan

Would a Reeve be above a Shire Reeve (Sherriff)? Is there a difference? As far as I can tell, a villein is an English-specific serf, so I'd use one or the other and put in the term "peasant" as generic laborer. Good work on the commoners.

I'm not sure where to place the various non-gentlemen military ranks within that order - below political, above peasantry, but I don't know about commercial, so skipping on to Gentleman (someone who doesn't have to "work" for a living) ranks:

Gentleman: Someone who doesn't have to work for a living.
Esquire: Or Squire if specifically serving under a Knight. Gentry class - doesn't have to work, but no heriditary lands attached to title.
Knight: Or Knight Bachelor.
Baronet: Or Knight Banneret - Baronet technically is an English title after the medieval period. A Banneret is a step up over a common knight. Neither this or a Knight Bachelor have heriditary lands attached to the title.
Baron: Any of the following that is not an independent ruler can also be refered to as a Baron or Lord. Might have traditional estates, but they were not political subdivisions such as counties.
Viscount: Vice-count. Not much different than a Baron beyond where you get to sit at the table.
Count: Earl, Graf, Jarl - rules a county.
Margrave: Marquess, Margraf, Marquis - a "super-count".
Duke: Here's we we get confusing because of England. In England, the King's brothers - I imagine that it was adopted for etiquette purposes on ranking. Rules a duchy. Dux meaning leader.
Grand Duke: Either top of the baron class, or occasionally an independent ruler. Skipping Archduke because there was only one....
Prince: Independent ruler of a Principality (such as Monaco). Princeps - first or foremost. Also the sons of the king of England.
King: It's good to be king!
Emperor : Oddly chosen as a rank lower than King by Julius Caeser since Rome didn't allow kings. Didn't fool his assassins, but the title stuck.
Redwine the Ribald: Stare long enough into the abyss...
Two-Tonic Tippler: ...and you spit into it.

Look to the left of your message under your username. Right now you're a Peasant.

Hi Ben,
Any progress on the naming conventions above 150 posts? You've certainly been given a boatload of ideas, perhaps too many to reasonably be sorted.
I like the idea of categories. I lurk on a military related site, and they use military ranks -- dead easy to sort the order.
One idea for developing a list: find a medieval historian (or whatever) and ask him/her to create a sort order from our lists of suggestions. That might give more legitimacy to whatever is adopted, and reduce any comments of "my ordering is better".
Just my random thoughts on the matter. And now I can add one more to my post count... villein, here I come

Well, I don't know, Barbapple. I think there should be a long list of ranks, so that you can keep on getting higher and higher ranks. I also think that there should be a different ranking system for women. For instince, instead of "Duke", a woman would be "Duchess". Just a thought. I also think that "Villein" should be lower than "Peasant".

Hello!
Barbapple wrote:151-200 posts= Squire

*200*
So I'm on the cusp of being a knight! Yeah! The accolade is near.
251-300 posts= Legend
So Ben E. is about to be re-released. Of course that means he had to be discontinued first. I'm not completely sure if I like this idea.
