Do us old farts a favor and explain "Steampunk." Is there a movie or TV show, book that embraces the gestalt of the notion? I see jury-rigged derigibles, floating rocks with buildings... I don't get it. Is it like a retro-future deal? Modern technology with Jules Verne nomenclature? If it includes Timmy then it must be banished! :^)

This thread from Classic-Space asks the same question, and has many answers, some written by me. Razumikhin's (username Jonesy on CC) reply (on page 2) includes some good links as well. The Blue Knight wrote:Do us old farts a favor and explain "Steampunk." That's a wealth of material. Bruce, I have a love/hate relationship with Wiki. While I love the way you can drill down, I hate what it does to my productivity at work. I started with Steampunk and ended 2 hours later reading Wiki's entry on Watchmen, one of my fav comics, at 1:30am!
I get it now. I see this as a difficult (and therefore rewarding) genre to build in. I don't care for De Laurentis' "Dune" (wasn't that in '84?), mainly because of the 30's-Art-deco-in-decline design, but I do recognize it as a masterpiece of costume/set design. The characters look as if they stepped out of an ersatz Flash Gordon serial. I at least recognized 80% of the Wiki references. I don't care for the "punk" element now. I went through that phase in the '80's, and I'm much more hopeful for the future now.
I think in the end I prefer something truly futuristic. The again what is futurisic today may be 22nd century "gaspunk" or "petrolpunk" refering to our reliance on petrolium now. Hey, did I just coin a new term?
Thanks for the links gentlemen
