Theme Review: Fright Knights
I have to admit that the Fright Knights actually brought me back for a brief time as well. Basil's tower was a bit odd because it was so tall, but I actually liked it quite a bit. And the figs with the bat-helmets were my favorite!
I had just seen Conan the Destroyer, and their helmets reminded me of these cool warriors from the movie:

(Sorry, I couldn't find any pics)
Anyway, the Witch Mansion and the price of LEGO in general scared me away again - not to mention that I was too embarrassed to buy the sets in stores and I don't believe bricklink even existed then

Ha ha ha - indeed you did! I hadn't thought of that.
The guys in that movie were great bad guys - really bad too - and led by an evil magic-using woman, if I remember well.... which seemed to fit Fright Knights perfect for me.

These folk came out during my Dark Age, so I've never owned any. In retrospect, that's not really a bad thing.
However, I like 6097 in a way. The wall goes all the way around and is more than one stud high, and so much of it is brick-built instead of using panels or specialized pieces (something 6090 and the KK castles cannot lay claim to). There are some interesting architectural things as well, like the black "frame" around the tower window. I've seen things like that in MOCs, but not in official LEGO sets. Fill in a few of those side-openings in the curtain wall and chop that tower by about half (I'd keep the top half, personally) and I think it'd look pretty good. Not to mention you'd get so many useful pieces out of it.
And as others have mentioned, the soldier torsos are great. Absolutely beautiful generic armor - and I like that horse barding better than any faction-specific one I've seen (with the possible exception of the new Crown Knights, as it shows armor (!) underneath). I definitely plan to nab some of those off Bricklink.
Other than that, what I've seen of the line doesn't look like much good. At all. I remember seeing Witch's Manor on the shelf back when this line was running, and just... shaking my head.

I agree with most of the above comments regarding pros and cons. The only reason I'm posting this is to say that the 3 types of generic soldiers in this theme (knight, archer and swordsman) make up most of my pre-Crown Knights army, and I absolutely love them! And the Bat Lord torso is very useful, too.
