I think this is a second golden age of all Lego. Aqua Raiders rocked, the new City stuff is great, the Creator stuff is amazing, the Castle sets are awesome, and the new 2008 Space sets are even starting to look good.

Ah, but BFF is imune to inflation . When it was re-released in 2002, fifteen years after its original release in 1987 it still had a sticker price of $35 (you).S.! King's Castle Siege is a great set, but BFF was insane value for its time. Heck, almost all of my grey corner wall pieces came thanks to a mass purchase of BFF Legends.

A point which I too noticed (and thought was odd... that a re-release would be so cheap). Nevertheless, money isn't everything. In comparing these castles, I would still want the new castle siege to two new BFFs. A matter of personal choice, only.

The prefered term (at least by me) is the Silver Age of LEGO Castle. Because not everybody is fully into the new sets.

How about the Chrome age?

It could also be because of the distinctive armor of the crown knights.

1992 was an interesting year in the history of Castle: not only did it mark the release of the small but nifty Wolfpack theme, there was a Black Knights reboot as well. The general appearance of the figs changed for the darker, the oval shield and dragon plume were introduced, and the knights were no longer required to shave every day. As Tony mentioned at the start of the thread, it almost feels as though last year's Castle sets pick up right from there.

I think it's too early to say that we're in a Second Golden Age, but depending on what comes to pass in the next few years I may fondly look back and say that 2007 was the Dawn of that Age. Specifically (and mainly I'm just reiterating what others have said here): plumes! the return of this part or similar design (a Tudor bit in a large castle is always neat)! an ambiguous non-bandit human enemy faction (dark red and gold, anyone?)! dark green forestmen! But heck, at the rate they're going, they might not even need to appeal to my nostalgia that much; I've been consistently surprised and excited by what Bricklink calls the "Fantasy Era" thus far.

One final note: one thing I loved about Castle in the 1990s was the way they kept making new factions, and placing them in the context of previously released factions. The modern trend seems to be to make two sets of enemies at the same time, then move on. The old way lets each faction get a wide range of sets, including a large castle! If they bring back this old feel (when releasing the abovementioned Dark Forestmen and Dark Black Knights ), I just might cry.

I have a few nitpicks with the new sets, but no more so than I would have with some of the old classic sets.

It seems to me also that this new wave of goodness is spanning almost the entire stock of new Lego, not just Castle sets. The town sets are easily as good as any from the Golden Age. The only thing lacking is the space lines, which are *better* but not great yet.

You're spot on here. The creator sets, the bigger town ones, and the castle ones, I'm dying that I can't get them all.

I was wondering what POOP was an acronym for, but I thought that if I typed "what is poop?" on google, I might not get the result I intended!

After a dark age that lasted for approximately 9 years, I can say this age brought me back into the lego castle realm. It was the appeal of the new silver armor and classic look to the minifigs and castle that drew me back in. If it is not a golden age then atleast it is a light age...

The new skeletons are cumbersome and difficult to pose but better than their limp armed ancestors... The previous mentioned flaws for the King's castle siege are right on point. I also hate stickers, but the castle is great otherwise. The Dwarves and Orcs (oops trolls) are a very welcome addition. With new obvious evildoers in the mix it gives the human minifigures a common enemy.

The new darker colors that started with vladek and the vikings are out of this world. the dark blue water and dark green ground and plants is awesome.

I love where lego is going with the castle collection and after seeing the new Chess set coming out, the advent calender, and the battle packs all I can say is WOW It is obvious that TLC is listening to the community and giving it what they have been asking for. I think this age of castle will likely be called the platinum age before it is all over and it will surpass the popularity of even the 80's and early 90's...
