Works basically like you describe, except the other way around. TT has been doing a lot of roman stuff lately, including changing his avatar and so an admin (not I ) changed his title accordingly.
Intersting... So why did you decide to do this to him?
Do we need a reason? :P

I think the best part of changing TTK's rank is seeing his "reaction" to it in his sig. It really makes the cold analytical historical machine show his personality a bit.

Hey, I read venvorskar's link as to what a gong farmer actually was (my guess was pretty close to reality).

The page also listed some other bad jobs like "Searcher of the Dead" and "Executioner". If CC had custom ranks, I would be either "Searcher of .." or an Executioner, because I am evil like that.

Will the Admins please change my rank to this?

(Ok, I know this isn't going to happen, because if you do it for me you'll have to do it for everyone.)

No, they, can't, because they'd have to make me a rubberchickenlord! :P
Excecutioner was an admin rank on my old Ninja Brix site before it crashed. :?

Partially correct. The true reason is because we are bitter, lazy old men who sit around all day and eat porridge.

HA HA HA - this is the perfect group of people for custom nicknames - no wonder they are unique.

Can anyone tell who a villein is? I suspect its similar to what a villain is, but i can not be sure.

Nope... Nick, check out my Roman rank vigs, where I made the same mistake, thinking they were the same. In that post, Formendacil describes exactly what a villein is.

Oh, ok I've read it. So this is a common mistake.
Actually, I used the encyclopaedia to find out who a Bailiff was, but I never bothered with villen(the rank is too low, I suppose  ).

TTK wrote:
It's a ranking or rating of a craftsman, usually within a guild. Apprentices do the grunt work while learning the job, and usually are indentured for seven years to a specific Master craftsman. Upon completing his apprenticeship, the craftsman becomes a journeyman who can charge for a day's wage, but still works for a master craftsman. He can change jobs (masters), and in fact was expected to move about and learn from different masters. He would have to produce a "master's piece" (masterpiece) to prove that he was capable and then be elected by the guild to the rank of Master (and pay the initiation fee and dues). He would then be able to set up his own shop and employ apprentices and journeymen of his own.
Thanks for the information, I shall use it in my upcoming rank-corresponding MOC, which will be a journey man.

I know there's more rank names, so why not list every single "standard" one. 1000+ Councilor and 1200+ Merchant. What comes after?

I think that's part of the allure/mystery behind it all...

Yep, Sheriff is next, and who knows what later - as long as I'm never shoveling manure again, I'm all good.

I've got a silly question.

What is going to happen to the ladies of the forum if(when) one of us reaches the rank of gentleman?

I'm all for a little gender-bending, but that's pushing it. ;)
