It's so hard to decide on a favorite!!! But if I had to... it would be 6074 Black Falcon's Fortress

It might not be a big castle, but the design is perfect.

Second favorite castle set would have to be 6086 Black Knight's Castle, it's probably the "best" castle and castle set there is, which would answer the topic question.

As a kid I always wanted 6059 Knight's Stronghold, especially since the Black Falcons were being phased out by the time I was old enough for Legos.

While it's not so high up on my list now I REALLY like the Falcon knight that comes with it.

I also really really love the front of King's Castle. The entrance is so awesome. I like the fact that it's got four high walls too, but the rest is kinda boring and it's just castle wall pieces. Limiting it from my top 3. But I thought I'd mention it anyway '(because) it's good.

6080 is the best castle ever made, why, it was so easily added to. I got one two or three years ago for pretty cheap and have been expanding it ever since. I also love the Crusader people although I don't have quite enough of them. The only other castle that I own is Dark Fortress which I think is pretty good but almost incomparable to the older castles. Unfortunately, I was not old enough to afford a castle until Dark Fortress. :(

6086 combines so many elements I really enjoy. I am a bit bias as I have never seen the most of the pre 90's stuff other than on the internet. I actually don't dislike the raised baseplates so 6090 might edge into first place. When constructed it just looks so impressive and has a ton of little details that gives it charm.

Would people please use the name of sets instead of #s. Sorry, I love lego as much as you do, but I don't have every set # memorized...

So if I used set names instead of their numbers you wouldn't know what was meant, either. That’s because sets got different names in every country. The ”original“ set name would be something Danish. Numbers, however, are the same in every country, so they are the only universally valid reference. Of course the American names (unfortunately :-) ) are well known throughout the world because the big databases like Lugnet and Brickset, as well as BrickLink, use them.

I’d prefer people using a combination of set name and set number. For example: ”6080 King’s Castle“. (Which in Germany was called ”Large Castle“ as opposed to 6073 ”Small Castle“. (And no, the German name was not English, I translated it.)

And these names weren’t considered ”names“, either, back then. Everybody was entitled to call their sets by whatever name seemed appropriate to them. So 6080 was rather called something like ”Lions Castle“ or ”the large grey castle“, as opposed to the former ”yellow castle“. You have to know, in countries other than the US and Canada the set names are not printed on the boxes but only mentioned in the catalogues, so these names don’t have this ”official“ feeling to them. The only reference on the box is the number.

This is just the sort of nonsense up with which I will not put.

That's why I post images. Then everyone knows what I'm talking about. I always have to look up the numbers when people are talking about sets.

I owned 6080 King's Castle (flat baseboard, grey walls) as a kid. I am waiting for a chance to get it on ebay now. I've a soft spot for it and it's quite large, but it is a bit plain too compared to some of the other castles. I now own 6074 Black Falcon's Fortress (flat brick base small grey castle); it is cute, and a good design, but it is small.

I also own 6085 The Black Fortress (flat baseboard black castle); I think either it or 6086 Black Knight's Castle (3D base black castle in photo above), which I don't have, would rank as my favorite. Perhaps if I get hold of the latter on ebay it will be my favorite, I'll have to see it first-hand to know.

I agree about the modularity of the early castles being good. I would love to see two Black Fortresses joined back to back; but my sister had packed hers away for the time being before I got mine!

I'm hoping to get the 6081 King's Mountain Fortress (grey castle on 3D base) at some stage, but I doubt it will rank higher in my esteem than the castles I've mentioned.

I like the Dragon Masters but their largest castle doesn't count as a decent proper sized one in my opinion.

I'm not that interested in owning the Royal Knights (guys with just the lion head on white shields). Their castles seem a bit too stylised.

I might have posted in this thread before, but I guess I will say it again.

I think the best designed big castle is 6085 Black Monarch's Castle :) I love the symmetry and the design, yet its nice and playable!

The castle with the best figs (by far actually, IMO) is 6086 Black Knights' Fortress/Castle. Love the dragon plumes on the visor and euro armour combination!

The best small castle, for me, would be 6074 Black Falcons' Fortress. Firstly, its grey (woohoo!) and its really very nice either closed or opened up.

And last but not least, I think the best Lego Castle set ever designed is.....
a tie between 6074 and 6067 Guarded Inn! :)
