To Dan (and anyone else)

As I can see your opinion and partly agree I still think it was a bit harsh (but apology accepted). Like how you said that Lego is just copying ideas from MOCs, it seems true but in a way that's good. We buy sets for the pieces and then make what we want, but why then is it a bad thing that Lego is producing sets that are similar to our creations? Basically all Lego is doing is making sets that are what we want and include the pieces we want/need (so how is that bad?). In my opinion the set is awesome because I really want medieval houses and I don't have the pieces to make them so this set has the houses I want and the pieces to make some of my own. I also need peasants and food. A cow or a horse is always nice. So I think this is a great set! But that's just my opinion.

(but then again I might not fully understand your opinion because I have only been a Castle fan since KK2  and I never knew the old sets)

(hope what I just said makes sense) :?

(oh and I don't intend on being rude toward anyone just putting in my opinion)

I'm sure there are the collectors out there who will do just that but I'd wager that the vast majority will be buying this set for the parts and figs. Sure you can find parts cheaper on bricklink but not always and it seems these days that if one wants only the cool figs from a set, quite often it's not worth bricklinking them. To buy the nice assortment of parts found in this set a person would likely also have to make numerous purchases from multiple stores as well. Not worth it to me, I'll just go ahead and buy the set.

Trevor
I'm likely to leave it together, then modify it. I do not like the style of hinging buildings in half - in my own MoCs I prefer to have the building floors static, with two adjacent walls hinging out in an L fashion. I think splitting the floor makes the interior look too small, and more awkward to set a scene in.

Also I think the blacksmith/stables I would leave in the open position and expand it as two adjacent buildings (i.e. add the same size of extra building to the rear of each half).

Finally I think I'd like to add more buildings of a similar scale - try to have a church and some other structures. I have a quite large collection, but even so it's more acheivable for me to build a couple buildings of this scale rather than trying to have larger more realistic or exactly scaled down to minifig scale ones.

As regards special parts - if a set has them, and the other parts are ones I would use, I find it far better value to buy the set rather than spend over the odds on bricklink for a particular minifig or part.

Apology accepted, Dan! Thank you.

Now I need to apologize, as well. Hindsight being 20/20, I should have PMed you will my feelings. It appears that some people have taken my post as Open Season on you. Such was not my intent.

To everyone who is bashing Dan:

This thread was to discuss a long-awaited set. Lets get it back on-topic and off of any issues you have with Dan. I apologize to the community for inadvertently starting this, but it needs to stop. Immediately.

Thank you,
Josh

I'd be very interested to know if LEGO makes alot of profit off of these AFOL-themed sets. It seems that with most AFOL sets the price-per-piece ratio is far better when compared to the standard children's fare. For me, this is the real appeal behind this village. I couldn't manage anything close to this on Bricklink. There isn't a single country that is paying more than 10 cents per brick. Given the inclusion of 8 figs, 2 cows and a plethora of highly desireable elements (in otherwords highly-priced secondary market items), the value alone makes this set hard to pass up even if you aren't that excited by the actual set construction.

I've often wondered if LEGO sees much real-world profit on these sets or if they are an effort by the company to show fans that they genuinely care about the support of the AFOL community.

LEGO will not see a profit on this set simply due to the inclusion of the Turkey; however they see it as a form of advertising - such unique set will be known for generations, is a huge success among fans and collectors, and adds to the mythology of LEGO.

Many of us felt that LEGO Castle Fantasy Era was a step back in the right direction of true castle, and even though who weren't as excited by trolls or skeletons as they were by say, King's Castle Siege, or Dwarves Mine still supported LEGO and this theme.

I see it going both ways: AFOLs give a great deal of support and feedback and truely care about the quality and direction of the products and themes.

Even if Green Grocer or Medival Market don't have a high profit margin for LEGO, as their thanks to our community it pays off in other ways - like our loyalty.
P.S. If you need help making MOCs, making posts, or don't know what to do next, please, let me know! I'm here to help! ;)

I really can't wait for this set to come out. I'll use the instructions as inspiration to make more buildings, add a few street lamps and turn into a city from Eberron!

Not a bad idea... I might try that. If you vary up the colors and switch the interiors and some other layouts around, you can have a unique village. Tip: If possible, get as many of the Mosaic sets you can on discount (I got 2 for 5 bucks each!). You sir, have given me great ideas.

They may not make a profit based on this set alone, but I suspect the Turkey will soon be appearing in other sets and thus spreading the cost of making new moulds. In an era when the available parts palette has been shrinking it is remarkable that they would bring back this element based on fan popularity alone. Sometimes having tantrums can pay off and maybe some day everyone will have 30 pitch forks in their collections.

I will almost certainly make this building part of my display, just as I have the Blacksmith shop designed by Dan. What will probably be different about my display of this set is that I may not have two copies on display like I do the Blacksmith shop. I have one stock Blacksmith shop (still needs to be modified somehow to be Base8 compatible, even if just by building a riser to go under it. My second copy was modified to come apart in layers as is my preferred building style.

I probably will try to buy two copies of this new set, but one will probably go for parts. The other will be built initially stock, and then modified to come apart in layers.

Though I might decide to build both, and use the details as I see fit...

I think they would put the turkey in more than one set, but I think that set would be s@h exclusive  .

You never know where the turkeys may end up. The MOA Imagination Center was sent a box of dogs for the pick-a-brick.

We had them out here in CA. I was glad to see them a picked up a couple. Turkeys in PaB would be nice too.
