I like to play around with torsos, heads, headgear and weapons to create clearly distinguished 12-man companies and one sergeant for each.

In the case of Crown knights, a lot of Bricklinking was needed to eliminate most of the light gray from the colour scheme (hips&legs for all, also arms and helmets for knights). I used some of the Viking torsos, too, which blend very well with the Crown ones.
I will add to my post as well; I also like to change heads, because i simply must make my soldiers look as unique as can, so i try to buy every type of lego head that fits the era available. My archers, for instance, nearly all have different heads (excluding the standard smiley) to help signify that each of my soldiers is, infact, a different person.

I am currently working on a new 30 man-at-arms company, and i am using one of the Crown knight torso designs for them... only problem is i need to change the color scheme from blue to red to fit my kingdom's red and yellow theme. Time to Bricklink! :P

The last gallery was very impressive, but i prefer something smaller, not so much troops, i think that are a little confusing, actually my army is 14, 4 spikemen, 7 sword/shield warriors, 1 knight, two catapult assistant; i don't know precisely how many troops i'm gonna buy to create the army, probably i will follow a scheme like in Rome Total war.

Wacht out is a quite big image.

Her are my two largest armies so far. They could barely poke at the lines of Sir Robbo's army, but they serve my purposes for small Brickwars battles.

I've also got an equal amount of blue vikings, some skellies, and a jumbled up group of 8 classic figs (Black Falcons, a Forestman, and some Royal Knights). Oh, one more thing, I've got an army of pesants I made using mostly jedi robes and stuff that I used in a Brickwars battle one time. Now that was something interesting seeing as I didn't have any weapons to start with, post pics soon.

I haven't lined the army up for at least four years now. Perhaps when I get my LEGO room back after a re-carpeting & paint I'll hunt them down again. Large armies look ridiculous without a large MOC for display. Must build!

Some great (large and small) armies here that I haven't seen before! BTW, I was largely inspired by Troy T. Moore's Crown army.

I am currently torn between size vs. individuality.

On one hand, I really love these very impressive huge armies that some people have accumulated. Especially if they aren't stock figures - I appreciate the effort involved in collecting hundreds of identical helmets, shields or weapons, or taking the time to invent and plan out all those different colours, outfits, heraldry, etc.

On the other hand, I also enjoy seeing those smaller bands of mixed characters that better represent any real medieval army. I like the idea of adding off-uniform colours, a sword or helmet taken from a fallen enemy, or individual faces, too. A small-scale army, just like a small-scale MOC in general, might be much more innovative and interesting than something huge that was made possible by sheer purchasing power.

What do you all think?

Hun,

I think it depends on how your armies 'state' or kingdom is run. If your men all are equipped from a common armoury or source then they likely will have similar stuff.

If they are funded by an individual lord, knight, etc. this may vary or even more so if every man is required to own his own equipment.

Oh yes, you need a backstory to really determine what you want.

At the moment, both of my armies are supposed to belong to powerful centralised monarchies, so they have pretty standardised uniforms. (I wish I could show pictures, but this takes another month or so.)

I'm thinking of bringing in more variation, probably in the form of smaller auxilliary bands / companies, funded by lower ranking noblemen.
