Ancient Greece!
Ancient Greece!
In response to a discussion at this thread, I came up with this idea for a new line. It would be similar to the Viking line, with the Heroes fighting mythological monsters. For purposes of the poll, imagine them in similar style and quality to the Viking line. Here's my thoughts for two year's worth of sets:
Year One:
1. Icarus and Daedlus: ($10) two figures with some sort of winged contraptions (like the ninja gliders). One column. (I'm not real sure about this one... anyone got a better idea?)
2. Jason vs. the Dragon ($20): inlcudes Jason, old castle style Dragon, Medea, burpy rock scenery, golden fleece (flag). Skeleton.
3. Hercules vs. Cerebus ($20): includes Hercules and fluffy. Small collonade/temple. White statute figure.
4. Theseus vs. Minotaur ($30): includes Theseus, Ariadne and minotaur figure. Several collonades, maybe on hinges to represent the laberynth. Red string to find way out.
5. Odysseus vs. Sirens ($50): includes small greek ship, with Odysseus and some crewmen. Sirens.
6. Trojan War ($100): includes Achilles, Hector and Priam. Also a couple of Trojan and Greek warriors. Medium Wall of Troy and Trojan Horse. Some Greek tents.
Year Two: I haven't fleshed these out as much, but they would be very similar to the style of the first year ideas.
1. Perseus v. Medusa ($10)
2. Hercules v. Hydra and Centaurs ($30)
3. Bellepheron (on Pegasus) v. Chimera ($20)
4. Odysseus v. Cyclops ($20)
5. Jason (and the Argo) v. Harpies ($50)
Year 3
Any thoughts for year 3?
Prototype
Also, I thought I'd try my hand at a prototype of my idea. So I present, Jason and the Golden Fleece:

I remember learning Greek mythology at school, and I was so fascinated by the whole storyline, of gods, heroes, beasts and adventure.
I would love to get Lego sets that incorporated the Greek mythological heroes, gods and beasts. - That would be cool.

You forgot an option: 'This Poll is Flawed'.
I voted for the middle option, but only because I usually don't buy many sets at all. I'd love to stare at these sets if they were made though.

I'm a firm believer in the educational value of Lego for children. I think the small pieces inherently develop small motor skills. Most importantly, the open ended options for building and play offer a creative outlet and help critical thinking as well (counting studs and planning layouts).
I've envisioned a line of Lego specifically for schools that would bring many different historical scenes to life. I was always interested in history, but many children have a hard time with it. I think Lego could really provide an excellent medium to capture the imagination of children. Ancient Greece could be an obvious starting point, but clearly many themes could be developed—India, Ancient America, and Polynesia. Realistic depictions of different cultures would also provide new flavor to World Culture studies. I think small vignette style sets packed with detail would be well suited for learning in schools, and it would probably drive sales in the consumer markets as well.
Sorry for the bit of a rant, my wife is an educator. Personally, I'd buy the sets for myself because I'd think they are cool. I’m a bit of an army builder so I would prefer a legion to a band of Heroes... Still, I think the value of historical sets goes far beyond our devoted band of AFOLs and could really help move Lego in the right direction.

This sounds absolutely brilliant. That mock up is nice, too, but they probably wouldn't usethe old Dragons, they'd use either the Vikings full-size, Wyvern, or baby Dragons. Too bad. But yeah, this sounds like an awesome idea, I'd love to see LEGO actually doing this!

Like we discussed on chat I think this would be a good idea, especially if there were animals (ie. cows/bulls, pigs, etc) involved somehow. I would probably buy them just for animals, and greek armor parts!
hehe, we now have dead horses, but not even living cows...

This would be an awesome line. Another one I would include would be Orpheus (with a lyre accessory), and also we would need to include Pan. You should also include the pantheon. Hmm, both Leah Cardacci and Dunechaser have come up with great versions.
That was a real hole in the Viking line - the total absense of the dieties - Thor, Odin, Loki, Valkyries at the very least.

Re: Ancient Greece!
Well, this isn't really a 'better idea', but I think the best pieces to use for wings would be the Hippogriff ones; maybe in conjunction with a neck bracket, a centered 1x2 plate, and two 1x1 plates w/clip horizontal.Athos wrote:1. As I said in the origional forum this would be great! Currently my only problem is that your curent model of the golden fleece is, rather sparce for $20. Shat would be cool to have would be:
A "citadel of thebes" as I said in the other thread
A "twelve labors of hercules" also as I said in the other thread
A "helios an flaming chariot"
A"Stymphalin (how do you spell that) boar hunt with several heroes and atlanta"
It would also be nice to have a "Chiron and young heroes" set
God's speed

Well I'd envisioned the set list before I even considered doing prototypes. The Jason set, as currently designed, would have to take the place of the $10 set.Emp.Justinian wrote:Currently my only problem is that your curent model of the golden fleece is, rather sparce for $20.
