Crenelation Fun

Post by LEGOFREAK »

Hi!

I am in the process of creating the crenelations on top of my keep, and would like your opinions. I have here three different styles of tops. Which if any do you prefer? Or if you have something else in mind please post it here.

A: tile topped
B: jumper brick with 1x1
C: standard 1x2 plate
D: other

Hi!

I like the tile-topped one the best. That way of making Crenelations is one of the nicest looking ones I've seen! One question, what is the piece that you use for the SNOT-wise bricks? I can't seem to find it on Peeron.

Good work!

One a 1 x crenel such as yours, I like the tile top, but I also really like the
Slope 45 2 x 1 Double http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=3044 or the

Slope 45 1 x 2 Triple http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=3048 Your method of tiling the sides looks great too, added witdth for protection is always useful.

For a 2 x crenel I like to use the slope 45 2 x and the Slope

45 2 x 2 Double Convex http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=3045 for the corners. All topped with tiles for that smooth look. :D Of course this method is cost and part intensive so I will likely never do a large castle with it, but a decent sized keep is not out of the question.

So I voted other, but of the 3 choices you have ouctured there, I would vote A.

I picked A, even though its likely the most expensive version. But it ain't my money, so I can dream.

Where did those side-stud bricks come from? I thought Lego bricks were recessed on the side?

They could possibly be
Brick, Modified 1 x 1 with Studs on Two Sides http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=47905 with one of the side studs cut off. I don't know if Freak is a big part customizer, but they sure look like they could be custom.

Or they could be a 1x1 technic brick with a technic 1/2 pin.

And I think A looks best, or possibly a 1x2 plate with 1 stud on top(what you called the jumper plate) without the 1x1 plate.

Can't wait to see the whole thing! :D

I also prefer:
Slope 45 1 x 2 Triple http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=3048 Your method of tiling the sides looks great too, added witdth for protection is always useful.
But I can't recall a castle with tiled crenelations, so that would be my recommendation.

cM2,

You could be right. I tried out the technic pin theory and it worked. Didn't think Freak would cut up such a rare part. :D

It depends, on my Kahilawayan fortifications, the crenellations are thick at 2x3x2. For other factions it will be different, like the Babylonian style crenellations.

If you have enough 1x2 tiles go with A. The 1x1 over the jumper is a good idea but I think it looks like it doesn't belong there.

I think the tile-topped (A) looks the best, but I've found that I've almost always got something standing on top of the battlements (a bird, a suicidal minifig, etc.) so the 1*2 plate is a good idea if you're going to be doing anything like that.

If that is the case, could you not put a 1x1 plate under the piece(bird, flag, etc), and a 1x1 tile next to it? Or just a full 1x2 plate where needed. If it would have a piece over it anyway, who would know the difference?

Either A, or if you run out of bricks, go with C.

wow - a lotta great responses. Thanks! This style of tiling the sides is loosely based on the tower of london. (very loosely)
http://www.castles.org/castles/Europe/W ... C-387S.jpg
The way they used different colored stone to outline the crenelations.

I would also prefer the Slope 45 1 x 2 Triple but I don't think I can afford that. Maybe the title should have been crenelations on a budget :D
I will keep this up for awhile, but so far it looks like smoothie top is ahead :)

"Or they could be a 1x1 technic brick with a technic 1/2 pin." - and yes thats exactly what it is! good eye. I wasnt sure if that pic was clear enough.

Thanks again for all your responses. :)
