Bow or Crossbow?

I think this is the right place for it, but admins, feel free to move it.

Which do you prefer? The hard hitting, newer technology of the crossbow, or the elegant bow, seemingly mastered by all elves?

I got to go with the bow. Not only to I have and use one, but I think they take more skill than a crossbow, and so deserve more respect. Plus, as mentioned above, elves use them :D

Poll's open for 20 days.

<<edit>>My poll feels so wimpy with 2 options

<<edit--again>>I mean in terms of both lego and real life

I belive you are wrong on an account. The Longbow was a development to the crossbow, and much stronger.
However.....
In crossbows, you can re-use the same bolts after battle, giving you a well...unlimited supply
however.....
most crossbow bolts were not barbed, as an abundunce od arrows were...
so...
My vote is the old bow. If for only one reason:It looks better in Lego.

I like the crossbows, since the bows are slightley too big for a mini-figs hand.

Use of the crossbow became widespread early in the medieval period - the Normans brought it to England after they conquered it. Its use was banned by the Pope in 1139 (not that that stopped anyone). The English version of the longbow grew out of the Welsh bow used in the 1100s. Neither grew out of the other - though the longbow did displace the crossbow in English armies under Edward I.

The English scavenged their own "clothyard shafts" at Crecy, so arrows could be reused, too.

The advantage of the longbow was that its rate of fire was much greater than the crossbow. The disadvantage was that it took a great deal more training to become a competent longbowman. Both were powerful - the later steel arbalest was the most powerful, though the absolute slowest to use.

For the battlefield, I'd want the longbow, for hunting or castle defense, the crossbow. If I was riding on horseback, a smaller composite bow.

----------

From a Lego standpoint, I like the crossbow. The bow never quite poses right.

I prefer the crossbow for defense from static structures. The long bow is great for battlefield engagements. A smaller bow from horseback. A combination makes for great speed, mobility and range.

As far as Lego is concerned, both are nice, though the crossbow is a bit more historically accurate. In real life however, it really is a hard choice. While a longbow is quicker to fire, the crossbow packs alot more punch and would probably be easier to aim, even though it takes longer to reload. As others have said, it really depends on the situation. Overall though, I would think a crossbow would win if provided with ample supporting troops - especially on an open battlefield.

Hmm... I tend to think that each weapon has its uses, but I'd would go for the bow. However, I do wish Lego would create a Composite/Re-Curved/Asiatic/Hunnic Bow.

You have a point there, Two-Tonic!

The LEGO-bow is, howerver maybe a masterpiece of plastic art :D somewhat hard to place in the hands of a minifig the right way :?
Thus, crossbow it is!

I definitely favor the long bow. A little skill goes a long way, and it's so much more elegant than the clunky mechanical crossbow.

Hmm, I wonder if his avatar had anything to do with his vote... :D

With lego and real life, the bow seems much cooler... Never really liked the LEGO crossbow, although that could be due to the fact that I have more crossbows than mini-figs to use them...

In my opinion, the crossbows look better for a single minifigure but the longbow looks better for groups or lines. Also the crossbow is easier to come by.
