I don't think castle will ever really end as long as the Lego company exists. It might go through lame phases(KK2) but castle, space and town are the core of what people think when they think Lego.

Castle will never die! As long as CCers exist, then LEGO shall never extinguish the castles! We will never surrender!!!!!!
Ahem...hrrm...sorry...I got a little carried away.
God bless.

Castle will live on because
you are part of the solution. CC has brought awarness and attention to the theme. Had there been no CC during KK2, I don't think it would be doing very good. My reasons for thinking that is by the recent year of fan participation in the product. I have heard (on these forums) that castle (and Lego) is doing better than recent years. The ambassadors are doing a great job of conveying
our messages. I'm not sure if the ambassador program is new, but I know that the way they react with them is positive.
As for what's next, well I think that fantasy is selling good and will continue especially with the 2 LOTR prequels coming out. Castle may take a break with fantasy either right before or after those movies hit, but in the lull could go into the more traditional medeval era before jumping back to fantasy. Either way, we may end up with both before all is said and done. Just my thoughts.

Centaurs (hopefully!).
I'm not sure how long 'Fantasy-Era' will last, but i'd imagine even once it's run it's course there will still be a Lego Castle theme of some sort. It might be another re-imagining of the core theme yes, but I think Castle will always have a future.
I totally agree with Quickblade though- even if there isn't new sets in the same capacity as theire is now, the Castle theme will always be dear to AFOL and builders anyway.

That would be great!
Lizardmen would be pretty sweet as well. And I doubt they'd do it, but I'd love to see an Amazon faction.

I just find it so gratifuing that I can walk into my local TRU and have the option to buy one of 10 different LEGO sets that all work within the Castle theme together, and I can choose from other sets there as well to compliment my Castle sets just fine. Oh and then there is PaB and Bricklink. Me am so happy!!!

I'm sure the castle theme will never die!
Personally, I wouldn't want centaurs or lizardmen, really that has NOTHING to do with castle and more to do with myth. I'd want more historical factions, maybe some arabian looking armies like the crusades, or different kinds of Europe-ish factions. These are still pretty unlikely though...

Lord Tyler brings up a good point.
Will we see another human faction while the crownies are still in production?

I have no problem with semi-historic factions and fantasy, even out at the same time. I secretly am hoping that in the 2009 release of elves a rebel or bad human faction comes out.
I do not think castle is going anywhere. In great part as been made mention above, we keep buying them!
