Thanks, but no thanks. The website adds a sales tax of 3% over and above my State's sales tax for no apparent reason.
I'll hold out to buy more from LEGO.com or at the local TRU store.

i know you are excited to bring us this news... but this should be in the buy, sell forum. and instead of starting a new topic should be a reply in the "pirates sets" thread.

We noticed the tax after we made an order. It's basically the same tax rate of our local TRU store. I consider it an act bordering on deceptive practice. Why are they collecting a tax? That's kind of why people prefer to order online...
This just guarantees that we will order from Lego rather than TRU to buy a set whenever they have it.

Lucky for you. I can see paying taxes for online orders (many websites do that already and others are catching on), but to overcharge taxes is just wrong. Caveat emptor!

How much was the tax?

Tax is around 7% for TRU online.
It wasn't really mentioned at all before we went to process the order, but we did get to see it at the end, so there was the option to cancel it. It was like SURPRISE, fees! Probably in the fine print. *grumble*
I dunno, I'm just used to sites that tell you how much your product costs and don't hide BS on the end.

I saw that too! I called my TRU today only to find out that they don't have the Pirate sets.

I wonder if there will be a ship set priced between the Fort and Brickbeard's ship sets as a 2009 exclusive? TRU usually pulls an exclusive out like that, and a Soldier ship would be very welcome.

If you're in the United States, it's illegal to do otherwise. The reason why you so often do not pay sales tax online is because you are most likely doing business with a company in another state. The current laws in the United States do not allow one state to collect sales tax from the transactions in another.
Unless...
If the company you are doing business with has any physical holdings in the state you are in - a single store, a warehouse, a single one room office rented out in a city a hundred miles away from you, then they must collect and give to that state the sales tax on the transaction.
This is why when you look at the order form on the LEGO catalog it says something to the effect of "Residents of State A add X% sales tax".
This is also why I now have to pay sales tax on any order I place on LEGO S@H - there's a new LEGO store in Houston.
That should give you something to think about next time you say "Why can't LEGO open a store in my state?"

Not sure about other states, but in Michigan they have a "use tax." You're supposed to report on your state income taxes anything you may have purchased and had shipped to you from another state that you didn't otherwise pay any sales tax on. You then pay the sales tax for it at the end of the year anyway, assuming of course that you're honest and report it like you're supposed to.
