Medieval Food

Post by Velliscig »

Lego has offered a small variety of foodstuffs over the years, and sadly, many of them aren't foods that were available to Medieval Europeans. Apples, Carrots, and the Bread (along with "drumsticks" for well off families), are the few that feed the peasants in our lands. Perhaps the "ornamental fish" and the new fish piece that was released in the pirate sets can add to supplies, but all of these pieces (excluding the apples) tend to be rather pricey in my mind, and lacking in abundant quantities.

I am searching for alternatives. Other foods that would have been available to Medieval commoner are foodstuffs such as turnips, radishes, wheat (of course, ya need it to make bread!), and various others. The only problem with those, is that Lego hasn't made any foods resembling them. My mind draws blanks and my wallet draws cobwebs. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make these foods out of Lego parts? Accurate to scale, if possible?

Please reply with any solid ideas; I would appreciate it as much as my denizens. :-)

Aye, perhaps. Though I was thinking on more of a "raw" form. I would like to place some in the fields so I can have my peasants harvest and bind it together for storage in the castle.

The green anime wig (http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/x1569) can be used as cabbage or lettuce, as in the Market Street set.

Don't forget the cherries that are currently available on online PAB for a decent price. (I think cherries were available in medieval Europe. Or you could pretend they're some kind of berry.)

And I've used bare flower stems on 1x1 round plates to represent onions, turnips, etc. The scale probably isn't quite right, but it doesn't look too bad:

Pizza is suitable. Flatbreads with cheese date back well before the middle ages.

Actually, I like to us that element for things like smaller veggies, sliced veggies, fruit or even a slice-able salami. I prefer to use the round 1x1 Technic ball element for a tomato.

If you order the three leaf plant (the one with the large leaves) from lego, I cut up the plastic that came around the pieces and made the stuff look like cut up veggies. (I thought I had it in my pics of my farm on Brickshelf but I must have added it later. I'll post it soon.

You can take vegetable parts from great flowers found in last fabuland sets or "first starter set" (I think you could found them in other sets), perfect for made garbage,I will made a picture when I could.

I also use the 1x1 round plates, as well as plain 1x1 plates and the slope 30 1x1x2/3 ("cheese slope" ) in different colours for foodstuff. Plus I make further unspecified edible roots from unprinted red and yellow minifig heads with a 3741 flower stem on top. :)

As mentioned above, purple and green Exo-Force hair is great for lettuces and cabbages, and the tan Technic axle pin is also a very good idea!

Oh, and at the bottom of this picture you can see my very simple solution for roasting meat over an open fire. :)

Good idea Hun! You could use a yellow 1x1 cylinder piece for corn-on-the-cob.
