Lego Room Flooring
Lego Room Flooring
I've finally got a dedicated Lego room. Right now it has just bare concrete flooring. So its time to consider what to cover it with.
Any suggestions?

Re: Lego Room Flooring
I don't know if you have tons of cash to burn on this or what, but maybe you'll like my two cents. Maybe paint the LEGO logo on it? If that won't work, maybe a red carpet with yellow and black stripes? This is interesting to think about; I'll let you know if I come up with anything else. I'll be glad to help you brainstorm further if these ideas don't work. Especially let me know if you can do the ceiling or walls, as this would be easier for me to come up with ideas for. But, until then, I'll just be moooving along. Hope you like my ideas and I hope you post pics when you're done!
Wouldn't it be awesome if they made LEGO wallpaper? I would buy that!

Re: Lego Room Flooring
I believe he is wondering about type of flooring not color.
He wants a discussion on the merits of carpeting verses linoleum verses tiles..etc.
Me? I'd go linoleum. Why? I think it would be the easiest to gather a bin full of bricks that fell.

Re: Lego Room Flooring
That's exactly what I'm wanting. Though I think I'm going to go with carpet. Probably a lighter colored thin carpet. Though, I still think it would be an interesting discussion: if you could have your ideal Lego room, what would you choose for flooring?Bluesecrets wrote:I believe he is wondering about type of flooring not color.

I do like that idea. But it really would just be painted concrete and want some kind of floor covering other than concrete.Napoleon wrote:Maybe paint the LEGO logo on it?

Sounds like a bulk-order of baseplates would suit you.

Re: Lego Room Flooring
I took out the carpet and installed laminate flooring. Lino would have been a bit cheaper but we did the whole house with laminate anyway. I wouldn't recommend leaving the concrete though, even if you painted it. It's hard on your feet, doesn't feel nice to walk on and ruin your socks faster than you can say "Holy cow, I have a hole in another sock!?".

Why do I have to add the word "minifig" to my spell checker every time I use it?!

Perfect answer. Thank you for the smile!Jargon wrote:Sounds like a bulk-order of baseplates would suit you.
As for my advice to Athos - laminate. I have that in my Lego room.

Re: Lego Room Flooring
My Lego*scratch that* bedroom has hardwood flooring; I prefer it over carpet because when I drop something I can hear where it goes.
One of my old bedrooms had black carpet and it was a nightmare. I had to get on my hands and knees and look for black Lego pieces before vacuuming.

Hey Steve,
The coolest would be something like this off-brand rubber studded matting:
But I'd probably go with a very short carpet, the kind you'll see in kitchens. It would be warmer and more comfortable on your feet than tile or concrete, but still fairly easy to pick up bricks. You might also get those big squares of foam rubber that fit together, something like this:

I have carpet in my LEGO room and I'm happy with that. It's nice to sit on, and if I drop my LEGO there's less chance of the bricks getting damaged.

Re: Lego Room Flooring
I would say carpet or Hardwood. I had carpet in my "Lego" room before and it was good, soft and never turned cold, but it was really hard to find pieces that fell since you didn't hear them fall nor did you get any idea of where it went. But you get that help with Hardwood, but it sometimes turns cold and is not well suited to sit on. I can vouch for that after i sat 6 hours on it and well it isn't comfy... But in the End it's all up to you and your budget.

Re: Lego Room Flooring
What are the dimensions of your room? I would either go with hardwood or the heretical off-brand thing. Probably hardwood, though, in case you fear AC's Inquisition. I have carpet in my bedroom, and things got so bad with losing pieces that I put a very large green berber area rug over it, and I can hear pieces that fall on that; it works well. I would NOT go with lino, because that can get ripped if you move anything heavy on it. ( something heavy as in LEGO storage containers without wheels.) Believe me, I have seen lino get ripped by kitchen chairs. I did suggest something that wasn't just color, though: the red, black, yellow carpet/rug. Do you like that idea? It be a hard color combo to find in berber, but that's the best kind of carpet. Wish you luck! I wish I had an entire room for my collection. You said that your room has concrete flooring; is it a basement? If so, I have waded through 2 feet of water in my own basement, and unless I knew it would never flood, I would never put my bricks in one.

Re: Lego Room Flooring
I have carpet in my Lego room. It feels really good when I build while being bare-foot. The ability to curl my toes into the lush pile, helps with my creativity.
I chose a ‘chocolate’ colour, with the intention of finding any fallen pieces. Also the pile is very tight, I am not sure what the official carpet term for this is.

Re: Lego Room Flooring
Bruce brings up an excellent suggestion about the large lock-together floor mats. I would love to have an entire room floored with them. I have a few squares which I pull out every once in a while but they don't work very well on carpet. They are very friendly on the feet, and also very friendly to LEGO pieces. The only problem with them is they sink if you push down on them, so you need some harder surface for directly building on, assuming you use the floor. I personally do my building on a large table.

That is so very true. I don't have any window treatments up yet, so that sound is almost magnified. I can drop the smallest element and know exactly where it lands. It is a very convenient attribute to a wood floor. You can also refinish it, or throw a rug on it for the soft/warm thing.
Can't really see much of the floor from the pic, but a nice thing about it is that I don't have any LEGO element that is the same color (choose your finish wisely- mine is somewhere between med tan and old brown), so I can really spread out and sort on the floor.
Any suggestions for my disorganized room always appreciated.
