I think you're right, SSchmidt. I just tried to sign up and it tells me that LEGO are selecting applicants at various times, but that before the game fully opens there will be a period where everyone can play.

It is the same method they used for the LEGO Chima game. The first closed BETA was for friends and family and various others (the minifigure online game has been in that stage for a while). Then it moves into a closed BETA where they start to invite people in small waves at various times (we are here now). Finally, closed BETA will end and move to an open BETA where anyone who wants can test out the game and see if they like it.
I would think in the coming weeks/months there will be more and more invited to the closed BETA.
