Nexo Power Shields - question about the game

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey all,

Did you know that there are, at last count, 104 Nexo Power Shields (or, as Bricklink calls them, Tile, Modified 2 x 3 Pentagonal with Nexo Power Shield Pattern)? How many do you have? Which is your favorite?

To my knowledge, I have 28 unique ones (With a few doubles), but my favorite one would have to be the plain black one. Yup. I like working in black. Black is my friend.

Hey guys,

I messed up the other day when I was posting my April Fools front page. I should have actually posted this thread in gaming since these shields related to a iPad/iPhone/Android/etc? game called Merlok 2.0. I vaguely recall reading about this when Nexo first came out - I gather you scan the actual ABS shields to gain powers in the virtual world of the game, much like using the physical LEGO Dimensons pieces to get characters in the XBox/etc game, or using the codes with the CMF figs to get them in that game (I'll jump to another thread for that one). A couple of questions:

Has anyone played the Merlok game?
Is it any good from an AFOL point of view?
Would my 8 year old like it?
Finally, can you cheat by just scanning images of the shields, like in the Bricklink catalog, or do you actually need a physical plastic shield to scan? We've got a handful of shields from the couple of Nexo sets my son has, but I was thinking we could just get all the powers that way.

BTW, if you look closely at the shields in that figure above you can see that the image in the middle of the shield is surrounded by a pattern of rectangles of different sizes - presumably this is what is actually being picked up when you scan in the shield. This can easily break down into a pattern of ones and zeroes and you get a binary code for the different powers. It'd be fun to analyze these and figure out which patterns have and have not been released in sets, and presumably you could print up a fake shield for those patterns and find out if as-yet-unreleased shields have been built into the game as of yet.

-Edit-
Hmm, depending on how much of that drawing counts as a bit of information, there are at least 14 digits in that code, probably more. Even if there are just 14 digits, that's still over 16,000 different possibilities.
