For me, I'll say it's this little Ambulence & Helicopter set:

…but that's mainly because it's the first one I have definite strong memories about recieving.

But the first one I actually had was one of the Universal Building Sets, but it's hard to know exactly which one it might have been because there are several different such sets, and they're all similar. I think it might have been this one:

…just from comparing the parts list to the various pieces I remember having.

I also had this little police motorcycle set:

…but it's only a vague memory, and I don't think I ever built it the way it was supposed to be. I think the pieces mainly just got jumbled up together with the rest of the Universal Set.

So that's why I'm counting the Ambulence Helicopter as my first real set… It was my favorite set that I actually built following the instructions, rather than just a boxful of random legos that I inherited from who-knows-where.

How about you? What's the first set you remember? Any fond memories?

The first set I can remember receiving was [url=http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6490]Amazon Crossing[/url]. I got it on my 5th birthday, and by the end of the day, I had built and rebuilt it enough times to memorize the set. to this day, I can still build the truck from memory, even though I haven't done so in years (It sits proudly on a shelf) and I only had a couple parts missing when I built the rest of the set a couple of years ago.

However, my first set I ever received, more than one year previous (I have photographic evidence of getting my 2nd set on my 4th birthday) was [url=http://guide.lugnet.com/set/1464]1464 Pirate Lookout[/url]. Or 1696. One of those numbers.

I honestly could go on and on about my old sets. It's a favorite pastime of mine. And of a couple of my siblings.

All the sets you have shown here are truly amazing. The designing is quite good and really attractive.

That little truck set is cute. I can see where it would make a memorable impression on a little kid.

Nice My little brother had the Black Monarch's Ghost. I was always a little bit jealous becasue it had one of the new horses in it.

My first set was the [url=https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalog ... ge?id=6364]545 Build-N-Store chest[/url]. I've still got the case and dividers, and all the pieces I'm sure. I even managed to get TLC to replace the instructions a decade and a half after the fact.

I had a couple buckets of second-hand LEGO for as long as I can remember. My first actual lego set was [url=https://brickset.com/sets/128-1/Taxi-Station]128/338 - Fabuland Taxi Station[/url] - Received for Christmas around 1980 - 1982 when I was 3 - 5 years old. The pig was my first LEGO figure.

First Legoland set was [url=https://brickset.com/sets/1983-1/Space-Value-Pack]1983 - Space Value Pack[/url] - 7th birthday in 1984. Absolutely loved this. Memorized how to build all three sets and threw away the instructions.

First Legoland Town set was [url=https://brickset.com/sets/6634-1/Stock-Car]6634 - Stock Car[/url] - This was bought for me without a special occasion in the spring of 1986. I loved this set, brought to school, and build the alternate models on the back of the box. My brother and cousin got into LEGO that summer, so we all spent our allowances on small LEGO sets like this for the next couple years.

First Legoland Castle set was [url=https://brickset.com/sets/6012-1/Siege-Cart]6012 - Siege Cart[/url] - I bought this in the autumn of 1986, and it was in defiance of my mother's no-castle rule because she thought I would poke my eyes out on the spears. My dad decided to let me keep it. I was interested in stories about Robin Hood and King Arthur, so Castle became my favorite. Unfortunately, my mother refused to buy anything Castle as a birthday or Christmas gift, so the largest Castle sets I ever owned as a child were $20 sets I saved my allowance for like Battering Ram and Knight's Stronghold. I spent countless hours staring at the Guarded Inn in catalogs, but never managed to get it.

Last Lego set was [url=https://brickset.com/sets/6009-1/Black-Knight]6009 - Black Knight[/url] - I bought this at K-mart in early 1992 when I 14 years old and a freshman in high school. I still loved medieval stuff, Prince Valiant was in it's first season on television. Unfortunately, my best friend and LEGO buddy had just moved away, while my brother and cousin had already given up the hobby. I was so embarrassed to go through the check out with this toy that I quit buying LEGO. I later sold everything except the castle sets while I was in college.

10 years later, in 2002 at age 24, I saw that Guarded Inn was re-released. I mentioned this to my girlfriend, and she encouraged me to buy it. I bought four of them and added them to my still-assembled castle collection.

My first set was Set 111 Starter Train Set Without Motor from Samsonite with these instructions:

(Verified from a scan of a picture from Christmas morning the year I got it). I also got a motor set.

Prior to that, we did have LEGO, but from my understanding, it was a collection my dad's German colleague left with us after they returned to Germany from spending a year or so in the US. I remember having a 50x50 base plate, bricks, slopes, doors and windows, trees, and other bits.

I've only ever had one or two instances where I had to contact Lego for customer support, but I've always found them extraordinarily helpful.

Thank goodness for dad! A lot of this reminds me of my own experience. I had recently been reading Malory's Le Morte de Arthur and Tolkien's books when Lego came out with the yellow castle and I felt like I had to have it. I saved up my allowances for what seemed like forever and did lots of extra chores to wheedle money out of my parents to buy it. I'm just glad now my mom didn't say anything silly like, "No, you'll poke your eye out," about it!

I have never seen this set before. It's so basic, it really makes you notice how much sets have developed over time.
