Reviving broken shield grips
Nothing spectacular here. I just have a bunch of heater shields (triangular) that were toss-ins on an auction that had their grips broken off. I decided to take a "bathroom plunger" antenna that my bird had twisted into a pretzel, cut off most of the handle, and superglue (gel) the circular part around the spot that had broken. Seems to work fine except the fig can't quite grip it close enough to the shield. The other thing that springs to mind to use is a "beer tap". That would get the dual grip function, though I'd probably have to sand the sheared area on the shield flat. Any other solutions that people have come up with?

What about this part?

I use it all the time when I need handles for my 3x3 radar dish 'shields'.

This part http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/3959 can also be used for crafting new shield handles (use old broken ones, or you may have to do some cutting). The pneumatic tube T that LotL recommended is probably a better choice though.
The perfect part, but (and you knew there had to be a 'but') it is fiendishly expensive.Lord_Of_The_LEGO wrote:http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/4696
Warning: the following paragraph refers to violent action taken against a Lego piece!
For the brown triangle 'roadsigns' (BL lists them as 'roadsigns'), and for the black octagon ones too, I cut up a ladder w/ clips piece http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=6020 into smaller pieces (four per rung; 24 per piece) and glue them in the clips on the back. As long as you don't have a design on the front, you can have the "shield" held in just about any position and still look good. All in all, you end up with nice, and very cheap, custom shields. Apart from a few standard TLC triangle shields for royalty and aristocracy, I've turned to using only custom shields for my foot-soldiers.
I'll try to post pictures this weekend.

Thats kinda what I had in mind.Drucifer wrote:This part http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/3959 can also be used for crafting new shield handles (use old broken ones, or you may have to do some cutting). The pneumatic tube T that LotL recommended is probably a better choice though.
I have usually been very fortunate that when my shields break I can still save the handle and then glue that on, but recently I found a round shield that the handle is gone!
So I am going to take one of these, and cut the round part off, just past where it starts, leaving a gun shaped piece and a disc, and see if that will work.

I've done what you describe before, and it works pretty well. I've found the shield works a bit better if you also trim the other end of the piece to shorten it up. After that it's almost as good as new.LEGOFREAK wrote:So I am going to take one of these, and cut the round part off, just past where it starts, leaving a gun shaped piece and a disc, and see if that will work.
Hoping to have a witty signature and cool avatar one day.

I can see this for the 3x3 radar dish, but I don't see it glueing down solidly. At least now I know what to get for the radar shields.Lord_Of_The_LEGO wrote:What about this part?

I thought about the "torch holder" piece, but it sits the shield out too far unmodified. With all but a disk chopped off the end it would work better, but why not just skip the work and use the beer tap? Though I must admit I have hordes of these floating about and only a few beer taps (so I have answered my own question).Drucifer wrote:This part http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/3959 can also be used for crafting new shield handles (use old broken ones, or you may have to do some cutting). Heater triangular shields that have the grip broken, not making a grip to adapt real triangular pieces as a shield, but thanks for the suggestion for the latter anyway!
