Horned Helmet in da Hood

It's not that hard to do with a Dremel. Just grind down the interior socket in the helmet. Now, my advice is to only cut it down until the bottom of the nasal comes down halfway between the bottom of the eyes and the mouth. That simultaneously makes it look better AND makes it fit tighter.

Now, if you keep going to lower the helmet even further (And why would I do that? Patience, we'll get there) the socket starts losing its grip and it loosens back up.

Which was all just in passing 'cause I really had to grind things down (including the horn pegs) to get to:

The first thought that came to my head when I saw this was "Batman!" Don't ask why....

Seriously, though, this is pretty cool. I probably won't be doing this, but it's still nice to fall back on if I don't like my Viking helmets when they arrive.

That's really good. What does it look like on the other side, just curious about how high it is on the back of the minifigure's head.

It does look like it could be Batman, but I wouldn't have thought that if I hadn't read that.

PS, I get the joke.

That's pretty interesting TTK, Not sure I'd do that, but then again, I have yet to get them in hand and see how they fit. But... judging from how much you've been complaining about them, and fully willing to chop on them right-away, it seems like they're not the greatest. Now, how does this modification stand up to historical accuracy? And would it be even better if the "flared mail" part was added to the bottom?

I cut off the nasal, but spinning it around the brim comes to just slightly below the top of the eyes. Hope that gives you enough frame of reference to visualize it.

I think my poll has been running something like 70% generally like the helmet in its stock format, so I am in the minority with my complaints. The helmet does improve, both visually and grip-wise with a small amount of lowering, though.

I was willing to sacrifice one, because I had visualized this particular modification before I even got the figs. Honestly, though, my advice would be just to buy Red Bean's spectacled viking helmet - I just like to tinker with things for tinkering's sake. Adding the flared mail would be problematic - it would look different either by it having a flat LEGO color, or get a different speckaled look through Rub'N Buff. I just transfered the helmet to one of the new heads with the mail coif effectively built in.

Historically, this isn't that terribly far off a real viking spectacled helmet (except for those Texas Pride Projections).

Historically correct or not, this helmet looks great - I think it's a job very well done, although I still can't believe you were able to do this job... and so well!

I am again impressed with your work - this time with vikings.

Actually, I can see this working in a Mad Max Post-Apocolypse kind of setting too, but that is besides the point. ;-) Well done!

Same here, except I did'nt have the creativity thinking it up requires. I did, however, make one of my own, but it doesn't look half as good as TTK's. i don't have a dremel, so I glued some sandpaper to the bottom of a pen and shaved the interior that way. The eyeholes were cut with a plain 'ol hobby knife.
