Help with Castle or Dwelling roof.

Post by starhorse »

Hi all,

I'm trying to create some dwellings for medievil or viking villages. Problem is I don't have a ton of slopes available for the roof. I'm thinking I could use plates, which might actually give the dwellings a nice effect of having a worn look.

I was hoping some of the folks on here might have some suggestions for accomplishing this? It seems that the obvious thing would be to use the 1 x 2 hinge bricks, but perhaps there might be some sturdier options?

Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Perhaps try a 'floating' roof, wherein you hang a panel or panels of plates, which will make up the roof, where they simply cover the hole between the walls. Connect them where they touch, typically at the roof line, and then hang them on the building.

I found this technique to be quite valuable a number of times. One possible suggestion for what to use are click hinge bricks, connected and angled at 90 degrees. These will make great 45 degree angled plate built roofs.

I have always liked the 1 x 2 hinge bricks though the old style hinges give great flexibility for degrees...

THat's a nice looking roof... not a fan of the purple, but would look good in other colors. What exactly is holding those roof plates on? Is it possible to get a pic with one of them off? I'm now intrigued, and it may be good for starhorse, too.

Thank you Recluse,

I have the LDraw-File for a closer look:

The only picture I can offer is this:

Just klick the little pictures in my postings and you get the bigger version.

The color works very well in the combination with gray and tan. It brings some fantasy style in to the castle-theme.

You can also try using hinge plates (the non-click type), like this:

(ack, I can't get an image from the Peeron instruction library to show)

Wow, thanks for the great tips. I love that purple roof construction. Unfortunately it seems a bit over my head right now. I'm still getting back into Lego, and a lot of this stuff is a bit intimidating - I have to be honest. I guess I can start small with some of the more basic ideas until i've improved.

Majisto's roof is nice if you have the right pieces.

The yellow roof at the top of this page is atached using two technic 2x1s and a pin.

Gumby's idea works well at large scale, too: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=718179

Azure, a saltire cantoned with a star in chief and in base and two crescents addorsed in the flanks, argent.

Roofs... rooves... roofes... The roof is always the hardest part for me to build (and apparently spell), but here's a couple of one's I've done.

Here's one way to do it, not Castle, but the principle is the same:

Here's two others, the light is really bad, but you get the idea:

I like the way those are done. I think I should be able to emulate that easy enough. I appreciate all the suggestions and pics to go along with them. Thanks!
