King Leonidas - WIP

Hello All,

Some know me some don't, for those that don't I typically create custom Star Wars minifigs. Well I have been inspired, requested, nudged, shoved, beaten, and brainwashed into creating more "Castle" designs and figures. I figured with the release of the upcoming "300" I should make a Spartan, and not just any Spartan, but King Leonidas, as inspired by this statue

This is merely a work in progress and isn't quite finished yet, but I figured I would show him off and get some impressions to determine if the "beating" was worth it and how I did. Sorry the second picture isn't better, it is a bit "hot." Will take better photos when I have all the final parts. I do have another design coming in this "theme," so stay tuned, again waiting on parts for that one too.

Hope you like him. By the way, his face is a combination of Qui-gon and Wuher for you SW fans, just couldn't get away from SW. Oh, other note that is a painted Ron hair piece and the shield and sword are RBs.

Totally worth the "beating". Completely awesome. The torso and the legs are absolutely wonderful, and I love the head. The only think I think looks a little weird are the toes, since I'm not used to them on figs and they don't appear to match the fleshie color, but that may just be the lighting. Keep up the awesome work.

Edit: Hmm, this should be in Customs... Oh well.

The toes have a little bit of coloring around the edges to indicate dirt and to give them some dimensions. Otherwise they are flesh.

This looks great! Putting on the leg (hips/waist) decals must have been rough to do. Any plans for a shield decal to go with it?

Actually that is easier than you think. You make the legs flush with each other and apply the decal. Once it is dry and has been sealed then you take a VERY sharp razorblade and make two small cuts on either side of the hips so that the legs can move. Just takes a little practice, but if you use decal softner then a little valley forms there and shows you EXACTLY where to cut.

As I said before, nice work Kam! And yeah, it's about time you joined the CC forums.

Oh, and was I beater? Or a nudger?

The paint for the Ron hair came in this weird little testors paint kit I found on clearance at Walmart for $1. It is acrylic paint. Looks like this:

Great little kit, especially for $1.

This is a beautiful work of art, and really feels like an Ancient Greek. I love the face and legs the most and the toes look good ! :D Flesh, for me, just doesn't feel LEGOish, but you were able to make it look good! I wonder what he wood look like in yellow skin...

The only rather minor picks I'd have are along the historical lines - Kopis rather than Xiphos, and "silvered" armor (or tinned as the Romans did 'cause they liked things shiney) rather than bronze/brass. Regardless, it looks great. I'm looking forward to the Lambda, red cloak, spear, helmet and other paraphernalia of the panoply ("paraphernalia of the panoply" - I need to trademark that obfuscatory turn of words). Gonna leave all the gear natural cast or paint them?

Dunno about the movie - looks like all style over substance. Won't stop me from seeing it....

Looks good. It might be cool if instead of a decal on the shuolders, an epaulet was cut and the sides glued to the arms with the down part out. Did that make sense?

Dang I missed your wordplay!

It good to see you broadening your horizons! :) This looks extremely good, but then anything lesser would be a surprise comeing from you. I really like the decals and the head decal is perfect. Keep it up! Can't wait to see it all finished.

I agree with Josh, its nice to see some other stuff out of you. I also like this particular one. It has a greek feel to it, and you did a good job on custums and all of that stuff.
