Round Shields and Stickers

by Anthony Sava, 14 III 2005

Prepare to be pillaged! The LEGO Vikings have arrived, and we have their shields! Come check out how to take advantage of LEGO's newest form of defensive equipment.

Discuss this article!

The piece used for the Round shield isn't a new one; it's been around for years, but never before has it been used for a minifig's shield. The shield does not lend itself well to the more traditional factions, but the new designs LEGO has created open up a whole new realm of possibilities.

Most of the shield images that are found in this article depict or are based off of official LEGO designs, which are copyrighted by LEGO. However, these images were all created by me, and not simple scans. If any LEGO employee or representative wishes to contact me about the legality of these images, please contact me at sava at ikros dot net.

I think how to create stickers has been well documented. Just go to the 'Creation' menu of the How-to section of C-C to see the other articles for more detailed descriptions on how to print and create your own stickers.

TEMPLATES

The first thing you'll need before you start creating a shield design is a template. After all, there's not much sense in creating a sticker if it won't fit on the shield.

The round shield is just that - round. Creating an template isn't exactly rocket surgery. However, we will need to know just how big to make the circle for our template. So we pull out our ruler and find out that the round shield is 2.37 cm wide. Fun, huh?

So now we have a reference. Now we need a template. To create a template, the easiest way is to simply make a cicle 2.37 cm wide, adjusting for DPI, of course.

However, those of you reading this article don't even have to go that far. Here are two different templates for your use. Just click on the image for the full size.

These templates are big, yes. But that is so you can have a really nice, large image to be shrunk down with a high level of detail when printed.

These templates have been designed to be printed out at 500 dpi. At this resolution, the images will print out at exactly 2.37 cm wide. Pretty nifty, huh?

However, if you don't have a high level graphics program to work with, or a system that won't print out a picture in that way, here's what you will need to know:

In order to print an image at 2.37 cm wide, an image at:

500 dpi needs to be 467 pixels wide
300 dpi needs to be 280 pixels wide
100 dpi needs to be 93 pixels wide

IMAGES

See the previous articles. It's really quite simple. Find an image you want on the shield. If it won't fit, resize it. Either use it as is or trace over it.

PRINTING

Refer to the previous articles. You'll need to be able to print out the image at the right size, and you'll need good paper.

HOWEVER - These stickers have been designed so you can remove the center 'hole' in the design. However, unlike the Octagon shields, a single hole hand held hole punch won't be enough. The hole in the Round shield design is bigger, so you'll need to do some carefully cutting and trimming.

LEGO SHIELD DESIGNS
