Idea Book 250
Yaron Dori and Ben Ellermann 27 VII 04

During the 1980's and 1990's idea books were produced and sold from Shop at Home. These booklets offered hundreds of creation ideas for children. The creations were made entirely from currently available sets. Back when system sets in all themes contained large numbers of basic bricks and plates, a child could make most small idea book creations while being inspired to create their own castle world.

Our article, which will be spread out over several weeks, focuses on the castle creations of 250 Idea Book which was released in 1987. Many of the 33 creations will be discussed. Each one has been built and photographed to the best of our ability. We recommend using pieces from sets available in 1984-1987 but pieces can also be found in sets from other years. Discuss the article here.

Industrial Area - Market - Fair

Pages 42-43: Medieval Market

Those pages showed a small medieval market included very unique models that TLC even developed later into real sets.

It is the pre-print ages. The scribe writes his scrolls by ink and feather.

The model is mainly based from parts from set 6074 Black Falcon’s Fortress. The baseplate and roof partly is made from set 6041 Armor Shop. A really useful set to finish the roof is set 740. This set is BASIC but many of its pieces are used in the Idea Book models.

250-07 Smugglers Wagon

Bandit peasants try to smuggle someone covered with hay through the castles gates. It is a very unique wagon with a hidden compartment. This model was the inspiration for a few later Castle sets such as 1877 Crusader's Cart and 6038 Wolfpack Renegades.

This model is based mainly on set 6055 Prisoner Convoy. However you may need some more black bricks, plates and slopes that can be found in 6023 Maiden's Cart and 6062 Battering Ram. Peasant figures are found in 6055 and 6010 Supply Wagon.

250-08 Well

This model is made from 6074.

250-09 Red Lion Inn

The Red Lion Inn is the right place for the knights and their horses to come and rest.

This model is based on set 6067 Guarded Inn. The baseplate from 6041 is required as well.

250-10 Hay Cart

It is a very nice cart that delivers bales of hay or barrels of beer. You decide!
