Brick-Built Beast: Griffon/Gryphon/Hippogriff

Post by E of Alshire »

Inspired by Mr. Green Knight's wonderful Brick-Built Beasties, I promptly copied them.
However, I wanted to do something of my own, so I Proudly Present the Griffon [Or Hippogriff. What a dumb name.]. :D

Image

Postscript: I'd take suggestions on the wings, because they were rather rushed in building. I might, also, be intering this into the Contest.

Disclaimer:
The hind legs are from Green Knight's Minotaur.

I just want to say that I love the beak and the feet. Great use of the Viking horns. I love the use of small parts that seemed useless before, but this truly proves that no part is useless. Great work!

Sweet creature! I really stink at making things like this, so when someone else does I am always impressed. :) Your selection of pieces is incredible. I would have never thought of all that. Very, very good job.

I would say, that with a tail like that, it is definitely a griffon. A hippogriff is half horse...

Hmm... I would say, with hooves like that, it is definitely a hippogriff. A gryphon is half lion, and I don't see any lion-like features here.

Anyways, a very interesting and intricate construction.

You are right about the hooves. I was thinking the tail was more lionish than horsey.

That look comes from the fact that I used spare parts to build this. I had to destroy onlt 2 viking sheilds and no other MOCs were disrupted [except Jango Fett... he was brutally disarmed to give the beast legs and feathers].

Any ideas on the wings? Good, bad, needs improvement?

It looks pretty kool. But one thing I think u should do is turn the beak 45 degrees to the right. I kinda wish I could see another view or three.

All-in-all it looks pretty good.
Why is it that you almost always construct what I'm planning to make? Its kinda scary.

Neat MOC!!! Built in the viking animal fasion, so it's "current" and considering it was mostly spare parts, well done. You are right that the wings could use some work, but with out actually making it myself, then tinkering, I can't help much. Overall great design, much better than the logo animal from HP. Keep on it!

Merry Christmas!!!

I like the claw pieces for the beak. But I'm not too sure how well the binoculars are working for the front legs, they seem a little strange. It's just a personal choice.

You did a great job overall, good job!

Hmm... I would say, with hooves like that, it is definitely a hippogriff. A gryphon is half lion, and I don't see any lion-like features here.
My original inspiration was the Chronicles of Narnia, for bothe the head and idea. However, I was just starting the third Harry Potter and really liked the idea of a Hippogriff. In the end, I rushed the back, and poor old Griff ended up with the legs of Grren Knight's Satyr. I, personally, think the stance is more of a lion, but if you like a horse, I don't mind if you see it that way.

Now that you mention it, it is a bit odd looking. I'm not going to bother them though, it's the best way I've tried for attaching the shield handle to the leg, and I really like that front claw.
Overall great design, much better than the logo animal from HP.
That was my motivation. Everyone always complains about LEGO's one-two peice animals, and I usually say, 'Well, it can't be too hard to make your own.' but realised I never had tried myself. With a wealth of materiél in Green Knight's wonderful beasts, I decided to try one myself.

Still looking for ideas on those wings... Surely Bruce, in all his Brickshelf glory, has found something worth posting on the subject...

Hey man, way to be! I always find it encouraging to see more beasts being built. Excellent job! A very cool creature and very good at achieving that spliced animal look. As for the wings, well they are tricky things. I don't think that one perfect way of making feathered wings has been created yet. However, there are some good ideas in Bruce's Brick Built Beasts article. http://www.classic-castle.com/howto/art ... ntasy.html here are just a few of those ideas: http://www.ancient-theme.com/1998/schamus.html and http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=364098

Anyway, a great start. Keep it up! :D
Let us stop for a moment and ponder the signiture...

Ok, enough of that!

Pretty cool, way better than the HP3 Hippogriff. Love the use of the vikings horns.
