The Making of a LEGO Brick

Post by tempuraja »

Taken from digg:
Businessweek.com shows us how the famous LEGO bricks are made. Some interesting facts revealed are that LEGO is the largest tire manufacturer in the world, and that the process is so air tight that only 18 of 1 million pieces created are defective.

That is amazing. Only 18?! Well, that is what we should expect from TLG, after all they had so long to perfect it.

I think I have got all 18 of those defective bricks from the last million  Just joking - but I certainly get my fair share ;)

Interesting stuff... I always like reading about LEGO through the eyes of the "grown ups" :)

That is kind of what I was thinking when I was looking at this.

Anyway, great Find. Very interesting!

From the begging of my collecting until 2003 I received 1 defective piece... Since then I have gotten around 9. My buying hasn't picked up that much!

God Bless,

I have never gotten a defective piece but my brother has gotten a "wrong" piece: he got a 45 degree 2x4 slope rather than a 2x4 brick in the Harry Potter car.

And what I wouldn't give to get one of those p-boxes filled with gray 1x2's ;)

This article reminds me of LEGO's own promotional materials (aside from the use of "LEGO" as a noun).

"The bricks are so meticulously made that the company claims that out of every 1 million elements made, just 18 will be declared defective and removed from the set" (emphasis mine). Could that be read more than one way?

The most interesting defective piece I have is a light grey 4 x 8 plate that appears to have run out of plastic before the mould was filled. It actually came in my Wife's Lion Castle she recieved as a child - it broke her heart, even more so when I told her that LEGO service would have replaced it for free ;)

Very interesting article:

The above mentioned article states:
LEGO was named "Toy of the Century" by Fortune magazine .

Wow, I didn't know that. What a title to achieve. I am very proud of Lego.

Thanks for sharing.
