The Castle Traveling by Kotaro Ono (Earl-0)

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey all,

Kotaro Ono made this MOC, The Castle Traveling for a contest held annually at a popular LEGO store in Tokyo. The constraints (as I understand them) are that entries must be MOCs sitting on a 16x16 footprint. Anyway, here is Kotaro's fantasy castle creation:

Image

Hard to see from the thumbnail, but be sure to check out the gallery. It's a whole castle carried around on a monster's (Dewback's) back.

Brilliant work! Such imagination! I'm amazed that this wasn't one of the winners.

Oh, and I believe the requirement was 20x20 studs Bruce, as it says here.

The backstory for this MOC was worth translating and posting:
Kotaro Ono wrote:There once was an ancient, ancient, oh so ancient dragon. When the dragon awoke from his slumber, the world around him had completely changed.

The dragon asked the king, "O King, why has the land become stained red, red the color of blood?" The king replied to the dragon, "O Dragon, time has passed, and the world has changed."

The dragon again asked the king, "O King, why have the stones lost their warmth, and why has steel lost its sheen?" The king again replied, "O Dragon, no one knows. The world has changed."

The dragon again asked the king, "O King, what of the suffering on the faces of the people? Why are the people's faces so ugly?" The king again replied, "O Dragon, that is the normal face for people. The world has changed."

The dragon closed its eyes, opened them, and asked its final question. "O King, must children live in a world like this? Must they live in this world that has changed so completely?" The king gave his final reply. "O Dragon, the children, the children -- The world, the world --" But the king could not answer the dragon's final question.

The dragon opened its eyes, stood, and said to the king, "O King, build ye a castle upon my back. Now is the time that I will fulfill my ancient promise. The time has come for you to ride upon my back, seeking the real world, a world that does not change, a world for the children."

And so, the king built a castle on the dragon's back. The long, long, oh so long journey of the king and the dragon began.

Afterward, there never was a person who heard from the dragon and the king again.

There have been some really outstanding entries in this contest. This one, like many others, is both awesome & weird at the same time - the story is great too.

I love the style of this MOC. It in reality couldnt work but the way its built makes you think it could be done.

Oops. Missed the last two paragraphs of Kotaro's story. Fixed in my original post above.

There's so much to like about this MOC. First of all, it's shaped upside down, and truly seems to grow up and out from the dewback. Second, there's so much detail! I love all the chains, cranks, roofs, gears, balconies, etc. Finally, part usage. Anyone notice the Yoda legs under the lion heads? :D

Cool. Has a very fantasy top heavy feel. Nicely done!

Saw this a while ago on Brickshelf, and while the concept is a bit strange, er, at least a touch to fantastical for me, but it is very well built. My favorite part is the bazaar, its great!

That's absolutely amazing. I've never seen anything so wonderful. I'm gonna have to say, that's my favorite Castle MOC so far.
