IndyLUG Castle display at 500 Festival

Post by Crazylegoman »

At the 500 Festival on Sunday, May 20 IndyLUG set up a public display in Monument Circle in Indianapolis. The Festival provided us with a 20'X40' tent. We had 3 sections to our layout: Town, Space and Castle.

The Castle display was mainly a big Classic Castle City with armies, castles, trees and what not around the fringe. For the city walls, we used the CCC wall standard and the Tall Wall standard. Here are some overall shots of the display:

The main "castles" that we had were:

Paladin's Black & Red Castle

John's Baron's Keep

and Nathan's BF Fortress...in a moat

The Tall Wall sections worked quite well with the whole city. They formed the main front wall that faced the side of the tent where most of the people walked by. Of course, if you have a Tall Wall, you also need a BIG gate!

The whole gallery is here and is already moderated. We had a lot of fun setting up this display. The crowd really enjoyed it. It was funny to observe how adults would look at it and seemed pleased with what they saw, but several little kids would come up to it looking for something specific and be upset if they couldn't find it. "Mommy, where's the princess?" "Hey, where's Eragon?" "Is there a spy anywhere?"

That looks like an awsome display. I love the unity of the village and the MOCs are great! :D

Actually, I think that is happening at Brickworld.

Yes, the Hut Obliteration Contest will be at BrickWorld. Our layout at the 500 Festival wasn't actually a contest; just fun with LEGOs.

That castle layout turned out really well! I like all the details you guys added as usual.

I'm sorry I couldn't make it out there with you guys...but now that I have my house I'll have my own Lego room now

Who built the tower gate? That's a really good use of a raised baseplate.

The tall walls worked well too. Hopefully I'll be building more of those types of things in the future...

That's an excellent example of the wall standard in action. How many builders contributed to the castle display?

I like how the BFF was given moat status. Makes it look "complete" as a castle rather than just a set. All the castles look great, each one highlighting some nice building design and technique.

I hope none of the figs went AWOL with the help of acquisitive hands.

Thanks for posting this, there are a lot of great little details in this layout, which is not always true of this sort of thing.

Some of my favorites are:
1. The dragons fighting over the horse!
2. The pile of bones and armor outside the dragon's den.
3. This beautiful bakery.

On a side note, do I detect some non-LEGO pieces in this photo? (and I'm not just talking about the LA stuff!)

What a great display! I loved the Dragon's Den and Baron's keep MOCs. The baseplate roof and sideways LURP on the Den especially.

Do you mean the food? All of that looks like LEGO.

I'm guessing that Xena's... um... thong... ahem, is made using Lego elastics, and... um... this is really going downhill, so I'd better stop. :?

Ah, yes, now I see what you mean. Very MB-ish.

This is a great display! The tall wall works better with the original walls than I would have thought. My criticism however, is that the ground seems far too flat, some more landscaping would have been great to see. That is one area where castle can REALLY shine against many of the other themes!

Yeah...the guy that built that has some MB Dragons stuff...

I do too

I make exceptions for minifig equipment and I do like those MB flame pieces...

I'm surprised CrazyLegoMan let those on the layout...he's not known for his fondness of clone bricks :P. We've burned and smashed MegaBloks at IndyLUG meetings before .

Ah...and yes I believe the amazon does use regular lego elastic bands to hold her...equipment...in place

That tower gate was Nathan's. He did a nice job on it; almost too nice. His gate was so detailed and packed with MF's that it made the adjacent walls look bare in comparison.

5: Me, Paladin, Nathan, Leah and John.
Traveler wrote:Do I detect some non-LEGO pieces in this photo? (and I'm not just talking about the LA stuff!)
Yes, there are nonLEGO pieces there. Several of the weapons at the weapon shop are from either Red Bean Studios, The Little Armoury or some other custom weapons maker. (They're not mine, so I'm not sure of the source.) The campfire on the right is also nonLEGO. All of the food and the rubber bands on the Amazon MF, however, are true LEGO pieces.

Thanks! The Tall Walls were fun to build, and they also deterred the enemy to the other side of the city. The 500 Festival was a short 5 hour show, so we really didn't have time to do any landscaping. Usually we would have at least put the water area on a dropped table, but with limited setup time we went with all flat.

Yeah, I gave Nathan a good tounge lashing for those pieces. I think I'll make him be the one to light the clone pieces on fire at the upcoming meeting.
