classic pieces new sets

I just bought my first of the new castle sets. I am wondring why LEGO is reintroducing classic pieces like the short sword , the brown horse, and the bow. things we haven't seen in a long time. Its great that they are doing this but i wondered why

I noticed on Brickset that the KKI and KKII were not listed under the Castle theme. Castle 2007 is, so I guess in order to qualify, parts have to be in alignment with the theme.

Well, BrickSet is a fan-created website. They can list everything in whatever context they want to. Lego (the company) is not obliged to follow any fan-based categorisations.

However, Lego (again, the company) might have noticed the public demand for the old swords. Also they might have noticed they overdid it with large elements like the huge wall elements used in KK2 buildings, thus they brought back the wall element from 1984.

I'm pretty sure it's an olive branch to the AFOL community. Trying to attract the kids as well as the adults. It's certainly no secret that 80s/early 90s classic castle is considered the best. Here they are saying "we hear you, and we are doing everything we can to give you what you want".

so ... Wohoo! I do love all the walls in the Castle Seige ...

Probably because we all thought the new zwords were crappy and it was a way to pacify us, without a lot of impact on the larger children's market. Same could be said of the bows and brown horses. Easy way to get the AFOLs happy, while not really affecting kids interest one way or the other...

I am also happy to see the return of some of the classic parts, especially the 3x3x6 corner pieces (which where also in 8813.) I don't like the stone pattern stickers though. Does anyone know if you apply the stickers yourself, or are they applied at the factory?

The stickers come on a big sheet and you must apply them yourself. Or not. I just put all the sticker sheets in one big ziploc bag for Ragnarok. :wink:

After the huge chrome swords, the classic swords look a bit puny... It's a good thing I kept a stash of them for the new guys. I really don't like the stickers... I'm sure there are many who would agree. It just loses the feel of building a castle.
The term "Hobby" allows you to explain to your relatives why you still play with toys...

I agree but i did use the shield stickers in the viking sets.

You are probably right. They were able to please the AFOL community, without hurting sales from kids.

You could say this had been happening for a while - KKII and Vikings brought back euro armour after almost a decade without it.

I like the way they do this - each line retains some old parts whilst bringing in some new ones.

A small team of castle fans worked with LEGO in 2006 to give fan feedback to the designers of Castle. This is one reason why we have classic weapons such as the short sword, bow, quiver, axe, and pointed visor in the new line.

Now that the sets are released, I will be able to publish an article on fan involvement in the Castle design process. Recently, I gave a presentation at Brickworld about this topic. Stay tuned for more.

Ben, that sounds interesting - I'll be looking forward to the article.

I think it's great that fans are finally able to have a small say in LEGO's design process. I'm hoping that the fact that LEGO listened so well with Castle 2007 means that they will keep listening and continue to make AFOL's hopes and dreams into reality.

A small team of castle fans worked with LEGO in 2006 to give fan feedback to the designers of Castle. This is one reason why we have classic weapons such as the short sword, bow, quiver, axe, and pointed visor in the new line. Now that the sets are released, I will be able to publish an article on fan involvement in the Castle design process. Recently, I gave a presentation at Brickworld about this topic. Cool! Look forward to the article. I'm very much enjoying the 2007 sets; not only the weapons, but also the color scheme(s), quantity of minifigs, etc.
