I've seen this creature from the 2007/2008 Fantasy Era line called various things. What do you think of it as?
If you call them by more than one name, which one do you prefer?

To me, coming from a D&D background of over twenty-five years, this is and always will be an Orc. It fits in perfect with the Gammorean guard as a hobgoblin and the "Dobby" figure as a goblin. Its height is good (standard minifig height).
My only wish is that LEGO would eventually change the shield and "brouch" design on the armor such that there could be different "tribes", ie., long skull, bloody fang, lid-less eye, but don't see that happening.
I do thank LEGO for finally making this figure.

I would think of them as orcs too but I already consider my Gamorrean as an orc. So what does that make this new creature with less pronounced features? A half-orc? I can easily imagine that a cross between a Gamorrean-orc and a human would result in this new critter. So for me, they're half-orcs.Nickmans wrote:I just call them Orcs

i think its quiet simple!
big ones are trools/cave trools, small ones are orcs/goblins.
there is no small trools
"In truth, Goblins are not a distinct race but a lesser species of Orcs who made their way to live in the dark caverns below the mountains. There they grew accustomed to the darkness and learned to climb the sheer surfaces of their new homes"
"Orcs are the foulest creatures to walk Middle-earth. They are evil-hearted monsters that rejoice in slaughter and destruction. Orcs bear little loyalty even to their own kind and will readily fight amongst themselves over the spoils of their conquests. Inept workmen, their clothing is ill-made and ragged, their armour is crude, and their weapons as well-suited to butchery as to war. "
"The Trolls of Mordor have been bred by Sauron so that they can withstand the light of the sun without turning to stone like normal Trolls do. Even bigger and stronger than their subterranean kin, these monsters are among the most lethal troops of the armies of the Dark Lord"

I call them orcs, while the big clunky guys are trolls.

Goblins or orcs. They seem too small to be trolls. The big guys are clearly trolls though.

Orcs or goblins. Which ever pops into my head first. But goblin is a little more common.

We concluded in another thread that the term Orc existed long before Tolkien wrote his books, it is possibly derived from a monster in Roman culture, latin Orcus... referring to hades or evil.lord of the rings, talkiens books. he invented all this so....
That being said I would call them Orcs, I think they fit the commonly understood definition, followed by Goblin.
As for calling them Troll, well Lego could be correct. To some cultures a Troll is a dwarf or imp living under the ground.
