classic-town?

Post by kibosh »

While I love this site, I'm itching to do some town building as well. Is there a classic-castle version of a town site? I've been checking in on Lugnet, but it just seems dead...

I don't believe there is a similar site for Townies. There was some talk of starting one a while back but I don't believe anything came of it. Town has sort of been absorbed by the Train community and there are several train sites and clubs. If you are interested in those, I'm sure our fine Mr. Anthony Sava could point you in the right direction.

A new site started not too long ago... hardly C-C's equivalent, but here ya go: http://www.trains-n-town.com/

That's cool and looks promising. It looks like there's not much traffic yet, but hopefully it will grow. I just registered, though I don't make a lot of town stuff (and no trains). I guess I've got various town vigs. It does seem like the forums are overly subdivided, which can encourage overcompartmentalized dorkism, but maybe they have a master plan for that.

I just joined the place as well, as I am the creator of that discussion Josh mentioned.

I am working on a town right now, so this place will be a nice place to get ideas from.

I don't dig Trains that much, though.

Megablocks. The worst thing you can do is start a forum from scratch with 30 trillion subdivided sections. It makes the place feel emptier than it really is, and I for one am disinclined to join a forum that feels empty.

^^I did join, but I have to agree with Teraflop. It just seems wrong to divide everything up into several categories. It's confusing and makes stuff hard to find.

Thanks guys.

What happened to Lugnet? I stopped checking it regularly a couple years ago, and it seems like a ghost town now. Come to think of it, I think I stopped reading it because a lot of bickering developed. Maybe others did as well.

Well, different people might describe what happened to Lugnet differently. There was the desire among some people for more directed forums, which led to Classic-Castle, then Classic-Space and other spin-offs (others, such as FBTB and the couple of major Bionicle groups had gone before). Different people had their own reasons for this - a desire for more theme-specific material, the flexibility of using different forum software, a perception of attitude problems among some Lugnet members, a desire to get away from certain endless arguments, etc. At the same time there were some structural problems with Lugnet - the old leadership stepped down and the new leadership hadn't stepped in yet, some people had difficulty registering, etc. As forums like Classic-Castle became more popular, conversation started moving away from Lugnet, which then sent more people to the spin-off forums. For instance, there was a time when I posted any castle MOCs to both CC and lugnet.castle, but as there were few comments on .castle, it became less important to me to do so. There are still some sections of the community that remain primarily on Lugnet. For instance, at the moment the train community seems to be there, though we'll see if they shift over to this new TnT site, and IIRC there is not a forum associated with LDraw.org, so that conversation is still on Lugnet.
After the theme-specific forums grew in popularity, other things started appearing that also shifted conversation elsewhere. Blogs have become much more popular, for instance, and the growing popularity of Flickr, with its usergroups and ability to comment directly on the images, have certainly played their role. I suppose MOCpages too, but that tends to skew younger in the comments.
