I never did an interior for this one, I did think about it but decided against it in the end. That looks awesome! Are there interiors yet?
The Abbey has now been taken apart so I can work on my next project.
This is a practice run on the first section of my gothic cathedral.

This is to work out size, proportions, costings etc.

nice start on the cathedral, if you're still working out the proportions I'd like to make some suggestions to make it more truely gothic:
I would make the triforium shorter and raise the clerestory to be about as tall as the nave arcade.
Also in most gothic churches the triforium is not a full gallery like you have built. It is simply the section of wall that is behind the roof of the side aisles.
I think the clerestory windows should be under a single arch, then sub divided by tracery, right now it looks a bit too "heavy".
here is a good example of a high gothic cathedral:

as a general rule for the gothic, as the church rises, the construction should become lighter so that the structure "disappears" into the sky.

Thanks for the suggestions on the layout,
I'd copied this to start

I'll try the moves you suggested and see how it goes.
Thanks

I missed this earlier...
An abbey - that's cool. The windows are nice, from what I can see.
Stupid dial-up in rural areas
Oh well, a very well-made moc. The tower is very nice, and I agree that the tree roots are very clever.
So this is what your previous moc became, and I can hardly wait to see your cathedral!

I concur. Unfortunately, my dialup is slow, so unless I can look at this at work (frowned upon), your pictures are too large for me to open, forcing me to look at the thumbnails.Sir Nelson wrote:This is a very good MOC. Smaller images and a neutral background would go a long way here, making it all the better.

Its cool if you wanted to go with that style, I guess I just assumed that you were aiming for a high gothic church.

To be honest, I havn't really got much of a clue at the moment. Its cool if you wanted to go with that style, I guess I just assumed that you were aiming for a high gothic church
I understand that romanesque style arches are round and gothic ones are pointy but that's where my knowledge ends!
I'm going to have a go at making a complete nave and see what it looks like. It'll probably take several attempts to get the look I'm after.
I think a mixture of both romanesque and gothic will be the end result.

Stu,
a very basic overview-
Romanesque
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanesque_architecture
Gothic
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_architecture
Round and pointy are part of the difference for sure, though one has to be careful as many large buildings took decades to build so some are a mix of both!

Thats brilliant!
Thanks so much for those, they will be a real help.
I saw this image in the gothic section
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Gotic3d2.jpg
I think a strip and re-build is in the works.
Looking at those centre pilars I think to get that level of detail I'm going to have to build a bit bigger.
Those pillars could be 8 studs accross at the bottom.
The vaulted cielings will cause me a headache, but they're worth a go at constructing!
