Moats...

Post by annie2200 »

I've just built an early *early* version of a moat for my King's Castle Siege, using dark green 1x2 bricks, blue 2x2 bricks and 2x2 tiles.

You can see it here

I would like some feedback, suggestions and criticisms please. This is my first larger scale building mod, so I'm not sure if it's looking it's best yet.

Thanks

It looks nice so far :)

I would suggest that you try to make the difference in the two water levels slightly smaller if possible, it would help make it look more like splash on the shore/wall. Also if you have any clear blue or clear trans 1x1 plates round or square, those might look nice scattered around the moat, I have some pics of that technique on my flickr if you would like to take a look:

Good luck :) btw, i like the look of the crownies with the dwarf shields :D

Thanks very much! The dwarves are my favourite.
I love that idea, of the trans coloured 1x1s.
Thanks for the advise about the water levels. I wasn't quite sure if they would be too deep. But since looking at your Flickr, Darkarden, I've got to add more tiles!! Thanks again

I think making the two levels about the same with some small differences would be about all I can think of. You could add waves bouncing off the castle and banks and have them ripple out if you liked with lots of 1x1 plates.

As this is really about the moat and not about the set, I'm moving it to MOCs.

Maybe some more blue tiles would be good, also possibly lower the water or raise the ground. Still, it looks good so far.

So now I've raised the water level abit, waiting on some 1x1 rounds and flat tiles from my dealer. It looks more like a river now before it was abit like a swimming pool!!
I really appreciate everyone's input.

Here's a slighty revised edition

Why is the water level higher that the dark green area where the drawbridge rests? I envision moats as being narrow still bodies of water with very little wave action.
How many books do you own?

Thanks Darkarden for your comments! :D:D

Rgurskey, The water level is higher near the drawbridge because I haven't quite finished that bit, there will be a levy, the brown parts are on order!! My moat is not narrow, to deter enemies. It isn't easy to build water with tiles, that doesn't just look like flat pieces of lego. The ripples are caused by a waterfall around the left hand side of the castle, not visible in these pictures, and is not quite complete. I love it though. It's defiantly better than the nothingness of the grey baseplate. Don't you think?

My friend is interested in medieval times, and researches throughly into castles. He's advised me that most moats were not motionless. They were attached to moving bodies of water i.e. a river (above or below ground level), because if stagnant, water will drain away into the ground quickly, causing massive erosion to the foundations of the castle. I love learning about these times and I hope that I have enlightened you slightly! This forum is great for sharing knowledge like this!!
