I try to sort by type and colour as much as possible.
I was starting to write out how I organize, but realized that it is fairly complicated to put into words. This would be one of those cases where pictures would be better than words.
My output on containers has been a bit over the top lately, and has to do with my current space limitations. I find that the hardware part bins/racks make for lovely organization of smaller parts.

by type and perhaps per colour when the amount is big or by colour families (like orange, tan, yellow)... I'm sorting at the moment, and I still have a lot to do. I also sort the printed things from the non printed like tiles, bricks and perhaps even minifigs.

Ha ha.footsteps wrote: I have a room. That way, my wife can close the door and the "problem" goes away.

I have my Lego organised by colour, but some pieces, such as minifigs and their accessories or plates, are in their own bin.
But i think i will have to reorganise, because i tend to forget what i have (because i bought a large sack of lego, it has not gradually grown).
So i might have to arrange them first by type, then by colour.

I have now changed and sorted my bricks per type.
And it is soo much better.
I just tested the "speed" of building from my collection I and am very pleased.
I built two dwarves mines simultaneously. Taking the parts for one from the box-set (just opening one numbered plastic bag at a time, as the instructions tell) and the parts for the other from my collection. And finding the pieces from my collection is much faster.

Plus. I now know what i have. When i sorter by color i had no idea, and basically just used the black and the gray pieces. The red, blue, yellow, white bins left untouched when i built castle.
p.s. Thanks J1A3L5 for the labels, I will put them into good use

Our Lego collection spans 3 rooms/areas.
Room 1 is a dedicated Lego room for storage and building/display. Wall of sterilite drawers and custom modular hobby tables with storage space underneath for totes and tackle boxes.

Room 2 is a bedroom with half of the available space used for additional lego storage. A few iris/sterilite type drawers, totes, tackle boxes, and Large set boxes full of parts exist here.
No photos available currently.
Room 3 is a basement which doubles as our BrickLink store. In addition to store product, this room contains all of the used lego we've purchased locally waiting to be resold or kept for the collection. It sometimes takes a few months to get to them. We currently have around 7 collections in the queue at the moment. It feels like an unending chore sometimes.
Might be SOME photos of the shop on my Flickr account, but no shots of the incoming goodies.
As for sorting, don't get me started! Lets just say its a rough formula based on maximizing accessibility to frequently used parts and finding rare parts.

Labels...
Hi there again.
I descided to do the cheap way of sorting. We have children, so milk is frequently drunk. When each box is empty, i clean it and cut it to the appropriate height. They are 7 cm wide here in Finland (not the children).
I made a shelf where to put them. However they are not transparent, so they need labels in order for me to find anything without looking into each one of them.
Therefore i made labels for them.
(actually, my wife tried different ways of labelling them and presented them to me, and we found out that printing large labels on regular paper and using wide transparent tape to attach them was the best option.)
But, the images needed to be larger, so i did made a script that placed the PAB 3d preview with 4 previews per page and printed them to pdf, thus turned them into labels, while maintaing the scalable text, so you can print it into any size and the text will remain clear as crystal. you can find them here. Each page contains 4 labels. I will probably make other sizes in the future. But here is anyway a "first" version.

p.s. LEGO, if you do not approve of this, please let us all download the stickers and labels you use for your internal sorting and for your PAB stores.
