Job Mullers Contest - The Reviews

Post by Aliencat »

As I promised, I'll be posting a short review of every entry for the Job Mullers Contest, because I'm so happy with the amount of entries we got, and the quality thereof.
Keep in mind that these are only my opinions, and not necessarily those of my fellow judge and contest host Bluesecrets.

I'll be doing these in the order they were submitted.
Here's the first 10:

Dr. X - The Meat Poker's Shop
Image
Dude, your first Castle MOC! And what a great one, awesome job on the walls and the shape of the little house, and it's good to see some subtle height variation in the terrain as well, instead of just a flat baseplate. Hinging open to see the interior is nice and old skool :D
The profession and the description thereof are original and funny too, so you definitely did a good job on this entry, Dr. X!
One thing I would have liked to see would be a bit more of a filled up outside that has something to do with the job as well, but I'm just nitpicking now. You should build Castle more often!

Knight of Honor - The Part Counter
Can't find a thumbnail for this one.
The job is funny, and the guy looks a little grim but happy to be doing his job at the same time, which put a smile on my face, but you could have done a lot more to dress up the MOC. You could make a field and/or surrounding terrain. I can't deny though, that this unmistakenly makes one look right at the guy doing his job without anything getting in the way.

Marbri - The Diver
Image
That face just does not get old! He looks very excited to be jumping into the water with a big crystal ball on his head :P
That crystal ball as a diving bell is a very smart idea. The little floating box with his airtube attached is also a clever little detail that I personally would have overlooked if I was to build a medieval diver.

Dr. X - The Rogue Carrot Exterminator
Image
Great minifig posing here, he's definitely going after that carrot with a passion! This one really made me laugh!
It's also nice to see an unevenly shaped base, instead of just a square baseplate.

Life_Unscripted - Livestock Juggler
Image
Quite an interesting profession that would be, I wonder when and where he found out he could do that. "Hey guys, looks what I can do!" Nice perspective on the hills on the horizon and the wall of air behind him, which could also double as him standing on a stage performing his famous livestock juggling act.

Shmails - The Sanitizers
Image
This is a very well built entry, full of nifty details. Take the water hatch being opened to pour water into the tub, and the fire under the grate to boil the water.
The sanitizers look funny too, and the way they all walk around in uniform doing their somewhat absurd work is very humorous.

nanuck95 - Medieval Pit Crew
Image
This one is just hilarious! I especially love all the different spectators in the audience cheering onto their favourite charioteer with all the panoply of a good audience. The guy with the cheese hat and the guy with the big glove are particularly funny.
The grease monkey is also a great touch, and so is the Jack :)

Shmails - His Royal Secret Service
Image
I must admit the sunglasses on the medieval soldiers look funny, but other than that I can't find much to say about this MOC. I think if you would have dressed it up a bit more, maybe a tree or a house in the background or something, it would look a lot more like a scene and less like figs on a baseplate. An a side-note, it's good to see a path that is embedded into the grass for a change though ;)

man at ye old well - The Weapons Grower
Image
Those are some odd plants, sprouting weapons out of white pod-like shapes in their hearts :P
The bridge particularly caught my eye, and I also like that mace tree. The ducky is cute and the house old skool in the best way possible. Is that gray bird a weapons eater?

Foamrider - Shroom Whisperer
Image
Awesome stuff. Although small, this one shows all you need to show and nothing more. The presentation of this looks very clean, neat and sharp as well, and the pose and passionate facial expression of the fig is great! This small one was one of the funnier looking entries in this contest, great job on that! I also like the frog and owl that are checking out what this wierdo is up to.
A nifty little detail is that sweet oriental looking lantern, I'll have to steal that idea some time ;)

And here's the next 10:

Life_Unscripted - Ye Olde Toilet Salesman
Image
This one is great :D The concept really made me laugh and the execution is brilliant. The people standing around with "What on earth is he on about" looks on their faces, as he excitedly explains what great goods he's selling.
The house has an interesting roof technique. I think that's a great technique for a small roof. For anything bigger than the roof you made here it would look a bit too messy. The blossoming tree is also a nice addition to the whole scene, and so is your terrain work with the path and vegetation.

Maedhros - The Falcon Airlines Cabin Crew
Image
Man, those Troll stewardesses crack me up with their fashionable haircuts and armour aprons :D This is a very creative concept, and it looks cool, the arched plane windows and pew like benches/seats. Too bad the photos are a bit dark, I would have liked to see some more of the little details, like the viking about to throw the chicken leg at the Troll stewardess lol!

Smiles - The Arrow Retriever
Image
This one is great Smiles, it's small and simple, but the fig posing is very well done and the Arrow Retriever's facial expression really made me laugh out loud. I can picture him running across the battlefield, constantly scared for his life.
The detail on the ground and the ruined arch is very well done too, it really looks like a fierce battle has been taking place there for a while now, and that's hard to display in a vignette, good job on that!

dabol_t - The tyre dealer
Image
A medieval tyre-dealer is a unique idea, the horse cart with tyres on it looks very funny, a bit anachronistic but that's what this contest is all about. With the wheels and tools against the wall in the background this scene reminds me a lot of a car workshop, more particularly the one from this catalogue just before my dark ages :)

dabol_t - The Policeman directing the traffic
Image
Busier traffic demands for new laws, that guy doesn't look too safe on his barrel with horses and carts rushing by him on every side. The bobby hat on his head really makes this one complete. Simple but effective.

dabol_t - The automatic cart horse wash
Image
That horse will smell great after this :P I like how that peasant operating the horsecart wash really looks like he knows what he's doing. Again, a simple creation but effective: it shows just what you want to show and nothing more.

SirNadroj - Ye Olde Play Peasant Illustrator
Image
I like your SNOT terrain there, Jordan, and the easel is very well thought out, I'll have to remember that one ;)
Hef also looks particularly happy to be painting the lady in question.

Foamrider - The Foamriders, Lords of Awesome
Image
This one is great! Very well built, I like how the boat is in the water, not on the water. The rocks that have been rotated at an angle also make it look more organic. You did manage to fit as much action as possible into a small scene, and it's full of funny connotations.

Black_Walnut - Dragon Grooms
Image
This one is cute and terrifying at the same time. It's full of great little details, like the guy scooping up the dragon dung, and the dragon's Troll dinner. I also like how the dragon sits on a stick like a bird in a cage.

Life_Unscripted - Medieval Chiropractor
Image
A very well-built MOC there, Life_Unscripted, great job on both the exterior and the interior, I like how the terraforming allows for a basement under the building. That bit over the front door is great too, full of nifty little details!
Between plotting to kill you all and chasing balls of yarn, I also build MOCs

Alright here's the next 11:

Life_Unscripted - Cartoon Mascot
Image
Haha this entry really cracked me up. The cartoon mask is just perfect. :D The facial expression of the woman in the mascot suit is great, and the kids look like they're really getting into the bashing. Great choice for the body of the mascot.

puddleglum - Pitchfork Procurer
Image
Very interesting job idea, I would never have thought of something like this. The room is neat and well made, with no unfinished bits. Not to mention the furniture, very neat and clean. The computer screen with him sitting on his piece of log checking Picklink for a good deal makes for a great scene, and I like the connotation made to the pitchfork Lego piece being out of production, raising the prices.

Shadowviking - Mixe Mastre Micael
Image
Oh man I can't even begin to describe how awesome the fig posing is in this one. Every fig looks alive dancing so very recognisable club dances. I didn't even know minifigs could be posed dancing this convincingly. The speakers with the Viking shields are great, and Micael is really getting into it there. Those disco torches are an excellent touch too!
Did I mention the fig posing?

nanuck95 - Rock Star
Image
Funny that you and ShadowViking had roughly the same idea at the same time. Great minds...
That singer looks so metal, and well so does the whole band. The dressed up stage with the skeletons and chains and torches and horns on the walls also really shouts metal concert to me, so good job on capturing that! The cheering crowd with the torches are also great!

Smiles - Sir Kittle's School of Higher Learning for Beasties and Abominables
Image
Smiles - The S.M.A.C.K. Squad
Image
Because these two are connected I'm going to discuss them both in one fell swoop.
I think the story connecting these two scenes is very funny, I love the bit with the skeleton and the big bug putting the star on the tree. I also can't get over how cute Buggy really is. That drawing is hilarious too!
To be honest though, these two suffered a little bit from being the same creation. I had some trouble viewing them as two seperate entries.

shmails - Mr. Plowsan
Image
This little diorama is so great! I absolutely love that snow plow. The snowy landscape and japanese architecture make a very nice change from the usual European medieval stuff within the Castle theme. And Mr. Plowsan cracks me up :D

Elephant Knight - Astronaut
Image
Haha, that jester cheering the austonaut on is great.
I also like those wooden beams his bungee cords are attached to. The ground looks a bit plain though, some tiles or cobble stones would have looked great there. The walls look very neat and well finished though.

Lego_holic - Ye Royal Plunger Man
Image
I honestly think that's the best Lego toilet I have ever seen! Haha and that guy looks really happy to be doing what he's doing ;) In the picture with him poking the plunger into the toilet I can just hear him grumble about how much he hates his job and this is the last freakin' time.

Smiles - The Spectre Ejecter
Image
Very cool scene, I like that wyrm. The job title Spectre Ejecter also really drew in my attention in the best way possible. All in all a scene full of action, and I like that guy being pulled through the wall.

Remyth - Monkey Wrangler
Image
This one is very well built. I love that path and the terrain work, but I wouldn't have expected anything less from you. The context here is funny too, and that green dude slipping over the banana split then makes it great :D

Whoa! I didn't realize how many entries there were! I don't know how I missed them all, but they're all really amazing. It must have been difficult to choose a winner out of this bunch. What a great contest. It's nice to see how creative everyone was!

Beautiful entries everybody! :)

I agree with Hinckley (this is the second time this week, I gotta stop doing that), I think everyone really pulled out all the stops to build some amazing stuff here! I can't tell you guys enough how happy I am with the number and quality of entries.

Oops I just noticed that in the third post I had all the previous ones as well, along with the 11 new ones in that post
I corrected that now, and am in the process of writing little reviews for the next 10 entries. They should be up soon :)

Wowzers! You said there were many entries but this many! :woo:
It's great to see you review most of them. Still, I think some of these should have won instead of other winners. I'm not saying any names.
I was planning on joining in with a moc of myself, a medieval car(t) factory... also displaying my opinion on what we call the economical crisis. but schoolwork got in the way, I had semester-exams.
Annyway... a great contest. a job well done by the contestants. :D

Amazing! This contest's entries are extremely creative. It's great to see all of these creative entries under one topic, which are so great. By far, this is one of the most innovative contest ever seen. There are many hiliarious entries and I am sure it will be hard for the judges to decide for the winners.
