Broken Legos

Post by ohms_dad »

I am sorry to say that I have quite a few legos from years of play. In most cases, a handles snap off from the shields due to an ill placed foot. Has anyone had much success in repairing this type of break? Is there a type of glue which works better than others for repairing lego breaks?

yup - plain old superglue works great. Sand the edges smooth, being careful not to take too much off. (you still want the hand to be able to slip in the gap between the handle and the shield itself.)
Get a flat surface to lay the shield down, make an armature with a clip on the end to hold the handle. Put a little drop of superglue on the handle, and press it down onto the shield. (while its still held in the armature)
Let it set for an hour, and it should be good to go.
I've had to repair several shields this way. For extra durability, if you are careful you can pin it with a tiny bit of paperclip snipped off with wire cutters prior to glueing. You just need to make sure you don't punch all the way through the shield itself.
Hard to explain without pics... I hope you get the idea though. :D

Wonderful, I hadn't thought of the wire core. Great suggestion. You just saved many shields from the garbage pit, including some from the old yellow castle.

DONT THROUGH THEM AWAY :twitch: !
even if they are broken you can still do things with them like hot glue them to a brick to make a wall shield or just put them in a Lego treasure chest as fake extra weapons.

Or as broken shields on a battle field!
To those who are about to Lego: toss me a few bricks.

In my experience, the best way to glue plastics is to solvent-weld them. Get a solvent that can dissolve the plastic, apply a tiny bit of it, and press the parts together until they stick together on their own. Then give it a while, maybe a day or two, to reach full strength. The resulting joint is as strong or stronger than the plastic itself.

The catch is what solvent to use for ABS... I've done a quick google, but can't find a definite answer.

Testors model glue works good. But use it sparingly. It welds the plastic together. Also use a nice ventelated room of course.
