Wizard of Oz MOC

Post by mhuffman »

Not 100% castle, but has elements of fantasy... GFLUG has an annual event called Festival of the Masters, it's held the 2nd weekend in November in Orlando, FL, in front of the LEGO Imagination Center in Downtown Disney. And every year, we're given a theme in which to build our MOCs -- 2009's theme was "Legends and Icons". A few months ago, my wife decided that she wanted to do the Wizard of Oz. So after watching the movie, I made a few sketches and decided to do the scene were Dorothy first lands in Oz. So I started out by making the munchkin houses (or huts). Here's an early WIP:

My wife's one criteria, she wanted them to be colorful. I wanted to get that rounded feel, and yet still have a smaller foot print to be "in scale" for a Dwarf minifig. At one point, I was playing around with the idea of topping the huts with exaggerated flowers (from plate) but it didn't look right, so went with the Lowell Sphere like tops. I did end up adding 2x2 plates around the tops of a few of the huts to give them a "flower-like" feel.

I ended up winning "Best of Show" as voted on by my GFLUG peers. The huts need a little work, but I'm happy how they turned out. And I'm really proud of my Clikits sunflowers that I made. :) Details and other pictures can be found here:

Mike,

Awesome work. I am not the biggest fan of wizard of oz but really love the way you have created this scene here. The little houses are perfect! They really help make the scene. How many 1x1 rounds and 1x2 plates did you use per house? Love the scenery as well, not over done and done very well.

I love the huts! The colorfulness (?) is great!

About roughly 200 of each per house. There's 12 rounds and plates per row (you can get as tight as 8 per row, but it will not allow for the arched windows), the huts are roughly 16-18 plates high. So 250 of each to be on the safe side.

I saw this on brickshelf and it instantly made me smile! I love how colorful you made it without losing the scene. The huts are great, but the overall sense of the scene is what I love. Great work!
