I actually like some of the things from this line. But to get better effect with the minifigs you needed to swap out parts and colors for a few of them. Parting out seems to be the reason most AFOLs would buy these sets. That's why I buy most of my Legos.
The best way to get army builders for the geometrical Jayko, you needed to have purchased BrickMaster in 2005. You got several of these sets;

http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?S=5999-1Laugh if you will at the laucher, but it gave you a nice horse armor that works with the later Crownies and those 'wheel' pieces that make for interesting wooden details.

http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?S=8777-1) gave us a cheep horse barding. I don't have this set, but intend to either purchase it outright or buy the more interesting parts seperately.
The large figures were largely better used for parts. The first round gave us a piece I need for creating a podium:
http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=47474. The second round gave us the giant shields that are perfect for heraldic display.
Most of the shields have been discussed save for this one:
