CC Set Review: 6011 Black Knight's Treasure

I think certain parts are still sought after in "rare" colors, like the dark green hood that's coming out, but the advent of Bricklink makes getting just about anything pretty easy, so maybe people just don't freak out about it like they used to anymore.

That is hilarous, i was just going to mention my excitement about the dark green hood! I like all of the elements in the set, but was there treasure in the chest?

I can't say I actually agree with you one that one, Tim. I personally do believe that your 5 year old brother could build this (As I've seen a few of his builds...), But in my opinion, this is actually a wonderful 'small' set with a few nifty details and accessories. So personally I'd say I can't really agree with you at all. The old Castle sets were in some ways, better then the new. At least for the price and the amount of minifigures you got. Still, it's nice that you stated your true opinion.

I had to think about this one for awhile. It's not a complicated or exciting build. When compared to the Mirkwood Elf set, (which I use for comparison because it's a modern set with a similar price point) it's a pretty simple build. All that said, I love this set the way I love boxed mashed potatoes and certain fast food, not because they are great but they are pretty good and wonderfully nostalgic. I had most of the castle sets from the yellow castle through the Black Knight and this is the one that stayed together all the time. This and the cart from the Knight's Procession were the only sets that I found intact when I pulled my LEGO from storage after 20 years. It may be because there is nothing else to make with so few pieces, but I played with this set often. Overall, I'd rate it 4 out of 5.

It is not bad. Your get a horse and saddle which is nice.

I think sets like this represent everything that is right about a low price point Castle set. You get a soldier and something for him to do. If you have other sets he can interact with those or be a stand alone for a little adventuring around the Kingdom (house). Little supply wagons and pieces of siege equipment are the perfect set for an under $10 set. These days this would go for a bit more than a polybag but I could see it selling for around $6 and I would buy them for my kids all day long at that price point. I know focus groups suggest that every set should provide some level of conflict in a Castle theme but, for roughly the price of a set featuring two adversaries, you could buy a set like this and a polybag with the opposite side in it and have a lot more play value.

I did really enjoy the Kingdoms line and wish it had stayed on the market long enough for me to buy more sets, finances weren't that great during the second year with all of those great civilian sets, and I think most sets from that line hit it out of the ball park but sometimes a really simple set like this one can be the draw to reward a kid for a good day at school or for a parent-child "date" to hang out and spend time together. There isnt anything like this out there right now. Neither LOTR or the Hobbit offers any small sets worth buying more than one of or really worth buying on a whim (other than the great polybags).

Nice and simple set. Won't wow anybody by today's standards, but it was great fun for a couple dollars.
