In the realistic figure category am I right that the figure could be based on a real person or person from legend, i.e. little john/ robin hood or like Joan of ark, or Mary Queen of Scot's? and the custom figure category is for fantasy figures, or figures based in fantasy writings i.e. wizards, goblins, trolls, etc...
50 - Yes. The 'realistic fig' category could either be a real historic person, such as a particular king, a realistic (that is, non-magical) fig from a fictional source, such as the characters in Chaucer, or just a generic fig, such as a random blacksmith. The 'fantasy fig' is for things like wizards, monsters, elves, dwarves, magical creatures etc.

51 - It could fit a few. As Legonardo noted, if you somehow use artificial lighting to make the flames, it could go in the "illumination" category. Otherwise that would probably be great for the "medieval town" category, or the "misc" category is always available.
