Weekly Set Review: King's Catapult

Again, a cute little army-builder. It would be a nice introduction to castle for any kid who got the multi-pack as a first set, and would probably encourage them to get more. I'd pick one up if they were still around.

Nice little set. The catapult can be placed near the castle walls or fortress. It could have been better if it came with two soldiers.

The solider looks like a black knight, not a crusader.

I disaggree. From 1988 to 1991, Black Monarch's, Crusader's, and Black Falcons had these mail torsos. All before 1992 when the Black Knight's came out. So a red mail torso can work for crusaders, monarchs, or black knights.

Cute little set that gets a fig and either some useful parts or a basic play artillery piece for a kid to fool around with. I don't particularly care for the shield with the fig, but that's probably nit-picking (nowadays they'd probably skimp and not include a shield). Nothing truly special, but otherwise solid. 7/10.

Not a bad set by half. Not really a good stand-alone, but lots of useful parts. A 100% useful fig, arches, weapons, and a design that, if uninspiring, doesn't make me puke.

Parts: 7.5/10
Playability: 4/10
Figs/Accessories: 8.5/10
Design (contemporary): 7/10
Design (universal): 7.5/10
Nostalgia: 8/10

Final Score: 7.08/10 (B-)

Not to thrilled with the set, but I suppose for being apart of a big pack its good. Lil guy with his artillery, which if you had some wheels could be converted nicely into a mobile mini-catapult I suppose.

I know that most of you do not agree with me on the Lion soldier, but here is my theory:

Most Lion/Crusader siege workers have different fig combinations than normal swordsmen/axemen/spearmen. I believe this is the case the worker manning the King's Catapult. Of course he has red arms, this is done on purpose.

Combined with the other sets, it was a great army-builder/parts pack. I got several of these back in the day. This set 7/10, the entire "value combo" (sounds like a happy meal) gets 10/10.

I like this little set. I agree that it doesn't have much and that the design is a bit terrible. However, I still think its good. Since it came with a value pack, I can understand its size. If I got it now I would love it. I only have one of those shields and Cruisaders are one of my favorite types. Plus it has a few old grey. Every bit helps.

I prefer brick built castle walls to pre-fab castle wall segments and this little set is a handy parts pack. The 1x3 arches and the slopes make awesome wall elements for a custom builder. The knight is just a great bonus. Back in the day these were often cheap and plentiful, but I never stocked up on them as I was looking to save my dough for the bigger sets. If only I had know what I'd need in the future...

one of my three first (ebay purchased) "golden age" sets. I really like the soldier, simple but nice. The shield is a bonus and he has enough weapons avaible. Some 1*3 arches, wich are a bit less common than 1*4 I think, and just plates and bricks.

A useful set.
