Dino Attack

Post by Merlin of Lego »

I was over at from bricks to bothans an saw these dino attacks sets. When I saw the names I thought that they were probably like the designer sets but being into Lego I took a look. This is mini fig scale and the vehicles look pretty good but the beasts look like they may have some useshttp://www.fbtb.net/toyfair/2005/

As much as I hate the juniorized dinosaurs, I have to admit I'd love these if I was a kid.

Hello!

That's probably true. However, to have dino play-thingies like that they must not necessarily be LEGO. And those Dinosaurs have less to do with LEGO than Bionicle. They are arbitrary like any toy from the shelf, not distinctive LEGO.
(No Bionicle-bashing intended. It's a construction toy, and people obviously build lots of stuff with it.)

I think the sets rock! At least, for a space parts monkey they do. :D

But ya, those dinos hit a nerve. I really didn't have a problem with the old modular Dinos, but these really bug me.

I liked the old Adventurer's dinos. And I liked the old dragons too. They at least matched the other Lego animals (horses for example).

The vehicles might be alright, but I can't get past the dinos. These dinos are just not lego... well beyond the 4 studs on their backs. They are awful.

Yuck! I don't like those sets at all. They look rather Jurassic Parkish to me. "Jurassic Park 2" pretty much did me in on anything dinosaur. So I have no plans to getting them.

I could bash these sets from now on and until tlc realize it's crap, but I won't. I'll make it plain and simple: I don't like 'em... at all... :(
I pity you guys who get these instead of vikings.

 Where did you get your information!!? If this is true, some European bricklink owners are going to be VERY happy as desperate North Americans flock to their stores. I wonder if its a copyright thing? Perhaps Megabloks has attempted to get an injunction to prevent LEGO from selling them over here. Boy, I hope that isn't the case!!

From Jan Beyer (TLC) the following was posted at the 1000steine.de forum:

Dino Attack will be released only in North America.

Vikings will be released only in Europe.
Is it wrong...hopefully!

I don't know. When Europe's equivilant to Jake says something like this, it seems pretty hard to refute. There is alot of evidence to suggest that this is true!

1) The Vikings line has been previewed ONLY in Europe.
2) Similarly, The Dino line has been previewed ONLY in the US.
3) The US Catalog does not preview the Viking line for the fall.
4) We have confirmation from a LEGO official (Jan Beyer) that this is true.

Overall, I'd say that this looks pretty conclusive.

The only thing I want to know is "why" LEGO chose not to release the Viking line in North America. It definitely sounds like a licencing issue. Also, I wonder if LEGO's European and North American product lines will continue to diverge in the future.
