selling HUGE collection

Blasphemic, I know, but I'm strongly considering selling off my entire castle collection. My nomadic life prevents me from bringing it along, and I would hate for it to rot in a storage somewhere. Also, if I eventually do settle down, I can always buy it anew..

Anyway, I'm a bit unsure on how to go about this, and would much like some advice. What is the best approach to this? Ebay, bricklink? Is it realistic to hope to find a buyer for the whole lot, or should I fence it one set at a time? Any and all thoughts on the matter are most welcome.

The size of it? Heh, I honestly don't know, I haven't had an overview for quite some time. From the top of my head, here are some sets I know it contains:

KK2: 8778, 8780, 8799, 8800
KK1: 4807, 4811, 4816, 4817, 4818, 4819, 6032, 6094, 6095, 6096
Royal Knights: 6036, 6090
Dragon Masters: 6020, 6048, 6076, 6082, 6105
Black Knights: 6009, 6034, 6085, 6086
Crusaders: 6039, 6061, 6067, 6081
Forestmen: 6054, 6066, 6071, 6077
Black Falcons: 6062, 6074

Multiple copies of many small sets, plus all the ones I've forgotten. Yada yada. Anyway, if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be most appreciated!

PS: I unfortunately live in Sweden, the high postage world champions. Although I could probably deliver myself to any major city in northen Europe.

Uhm, very good question indeed... that's also something I'd welcome some advice on. I have no idea. Won't give the lot away of course, but won't be very greedy either - I realise that the price for the whole lot won't be the sum of the prices the individual sets would get.

A huge chunk of it comes from a single purchase from a german collector, whom I payed EUR 400 (which I guess was somewhat generous on my part). But I will have to do some serious inventorying before I throw more accurate figures around.

Well, Ebay would be the fastest. Bricklink would probably get higher prices but would take quite a while to sell. It sounds like you travel a lot so it might be hard to sell on Bricklink and keep up with orders. So Ebay would be my advice. As for selling the whole lot or piecing it out, you definitely would find a buyer for the whole lot but you would get more if you sold sets seperately.

I also suggest eBay. Selling every set individually will bring you the most money but it will require the most work. You should especially sell the more sought after sets individually (which is anything before Dragon Masters). Also, how complete are the sets in terms of boxes, instructions, and catalogs. Have the sets been played with many times or mainly displayed?

Which small sets do you have multiples of? I am looking for a few of the small 90's sets that I havent managed to get a hold of: 1480, 1888, 6020, 1917, 1736, etc.

Thanks for the input! Yeah, I could never summon the patience to trickle it away, so I'll probably choose the economic blow and find someone willing to take it all off my hands at once. So eBay then I guess, although it would of course be even more convenient to find a willing victim here.

Anyway, I'll do the inventorying, take some pics, and nag you all again when I'm done. Thanks again!

Single buyer: easiest, but gets the least amount of money.

Individual sets: more work, but more money.

eBay: If you want/need to get it over and done within a week, this is a way to go. The best time to sell sets is usually once school starts in the fall, though (especially sealed sets since advance Christmas planning starts). Try to make sure your auction ends on a weekend (non-holiday). I tend to research the selling prices for similiar items and set a reasonable minimum. With the growth of eBay, I don't find just pushing items out at 1 cent and letting the feeding frenzy bring the price up works as well anymore.

Bricklink: If you are not in a rush, this is more likely to get you a higher price. But you'll have to be patient, and it will go out piecemeal. You can combine methods: put everything on Bricklink for x long, and then go to eBay once you just have to get them out the door.

As I am getting back into collecting castles, I would also be interested in the complete lot.

Since 1st gen KK2 is rather obnoxious (though cheap at the moment), I would appreciate the chance at getting a larger collection.

Mainly just a lurker though....

I would like to have a more detailed list of sets, volume or size for shipping and the resulting shipping costs and then I can realistically know whether I can offer you an appropriate price. If you want to PM me that would be great.

As was already said, if you want the best cash sell the rare sets on eBay. You can also do an auction on Bricklink for a bulk lot, and you are sure to hit more dedicated Lego buyers.

Ben perhaps we can get together and each take part of this lot, that way you get what you need and I get what I need and we help out a fellow castle-er in need. I am sure we could find a way to work it all out.

Thanx again for the responses, this is far better than I dared hope for! I'd very much like to close a deal with a willing buyer here on the forum.

I will start inventorying the day after tomorrow, so should be able to get back to you with some useful information soon.

Postage to US will be very high (something like SEK 500 or even more), but I'd be willing to cover that cost, as long as you take my poor self into consideration when you make your bid for the lego.

That way you as the buyer won't get any nasty surprises from our evil postal services.

Picking up some other random questions: KK1&2 sets are boxed with instructions, the rest are mostly only instructions. Quality is fair to excellent. I'll provide extensive picture coverage.

So, I'll be back with more useful details soon. If anyone else is interested that hasn't PM'd me, feel extremely free to do so!

I have just done a conversion and that is $63.50US. That amount for shipping doesn't scare me away - I've paid more. I know Ben would like to know about condition, boxes and instructions as well. I think we should work with the numbers once you have a complete inventory and can get actual shipping weight and size. Then we can come up with some numbers that work for all.
