Dino Attack - No Guns?

Post by Sir Kohran »

I was over at Eurobricks, and it said that the European Dino Attack sets might be sold without weapons.

:?

I'm not sure what to make of this news. On the one side, it could help for a less violent culture in Europe. On the other, does this mean that there is some cliche that says that American children are more violent than Europeans? Does this mean that set designs must suffer?

Any thoughts on this?

Here's a picture of what is supposed to be one of the European sets:

It's got a different set number to the US version, it's missing the guns and comes with a cage instead.

This is just weird. I can't even begin to understand the logic here. I just know that if dinosaurs really did attack I'd much rather be in the U.S. :D

I find this hilarious. American parents are the ones complaining the most on violence of what I know of, its like Lego says "Haha, taste this!". What next? A hippie theme for Europe and a soldier theme for America?

Wow. If this topic isn't a flame war in the making, I don't know what is.

Tempted as I am, I think I'll stay out of this one. :P

Interesting...

If they were to make the weaponless ones worldwise (aka. in North America) they'd have MY vote.

Well that seems quite silly to me. What are they going to do? Talk the dinos into not wrecking downtown Europe?

Cage looks like it might have some potential though.

LOL! Maybe Lego can do a license for 2 space-movie themes.

For Europe... E.T., where aliens are friendly and become buddies with kids.

For USA... StarGate/War of the Worlds/Independence Day, where aliens are enemies and get shot at by P-90s, M4s, and Stinger missiles.

Considering the Vikings weren't the most peaceful of people, I'm not sure what LEGO thinks they're getting away with.

"Okay guys, we're gonna need you to revamp all the Dino sets for Europe. Take out all the guns; take out the dinosaurs as well if you feel the need, we'll rename the line 'Attack.' Hm? Vikings? No, keep the swords and axes and catapaults and whatever other weapons they can use to gut the dragons."
I'd give the LEGO Company a pat on the back if I could. Thank you for the excellent sets. You are truely going in the right direction.

Spot on. I'm frankly amazed by Lego's actions here. They're damaging their set designs and stories for no real reason. I can only hope this is just a rumour, nothing more, and that Lego isn't planning this proposperous move. Please, Lego.

And let's take a look at how dangerous these "guns" really are.
The T-1 Typhoon is equipped with an XL-4 Voltaic Launcher with firing action, a Plarxx Radar Ray, twin Quintronic Beam Emitters, twin Sonic Screamers, dual cockpits, working boom crane, and much more! Viper, Digger, Specs and Shadow fly the high-tech copter against the mighty T-Rex. This powerful dinosaur is more than a match for any machine, plus it has a savage pteranodon on its side!
I hardly even consider these to be guns for God's sake. Voltaic Launcher is probably the most suggestive I can see, and it sounds like something they'd use in that old Beetleborgs show. If anything, the most violent things in these sets are the dinosaurs, seeing as their shooting lasers out of their eyes make them heavier firearms than anything the heroes have.
I'd give the LEGO Company a pat on the back if I could. Thank you for the excellent sets. You are truely going in the right direction.

I think it's the whole wartime concept that LEGO's trying to avoid in Europe (Europe being more heavily devastated by WWI/II). And truth be told, those wrecked buildings in the background of the DINO Attack packaging did really remind me of post-WWII Poland.

Still, I think Europe should get the original sets, albeit maybe with different packaging.
