Just was looking at Shop@Home and noticed that 10148 Assorted Plates in old light gray were listed as "Backorders Accepted, will ship by 07 Nov 2005." To my way of thinking, there are only a couple of possibilities:
1) They have to ship more from Denmark to sell in the US.
2) Lego is able to produce more in the old color...
I tried setting the shipping country to UK, France, Germany, and Denmark, all of which said that the item was not available in that country...

I'm pretty sure its option number 1, not 2. Old grey and brown have gone the way of the dodo...

Yes, that is correct. 10,000 of each bag in old grey and brown. And Jake was bummed that they didn't sell out.bombcar wrote:I seem to remember Jake complaining that he convinced Lego to do a 10,000 set run of those old grey brick packs, and they didn't sell very many.
Most likely a supply chain issue since we were told that when these are gone, that's it.cnelson wrote:1) They have to ship more from Denmark to sell in the US.
Well, LEGO is able to produce more in the old colors. They just lack the will.cnelson wrote:2) Lego is able to produce more in the old color...

It was mentioned at BrickFest 05 that the old grey/brown packs did not sell out but they sold much better in the US than in Europe. They were not sure why this was the case. So it is possible that more of the pack are being shipped over from Europe. I will have to ask Jake about this.

The description for 10148 says:
These elements have been produced in the 2003 color scheme.
Most, if not all, 2004 and newer sets have the new colours.
As for why the packs sold better in US, I remember hearing about Europeans being able to get parts in the old colours from the various Pick-A-Bricks at the major LEGOLAND parks. Getting them from PAB was much cheaper than ordering the assorted brick/plate packs.

Officially, the 2003 color scheme was the end of the old greys being standard LEGO colors. It is true new greys have been seen in 2003 sets, just as old greys have been seen in 2004-5 sets.monophoton wrote:AFAIK 2003 color scheme = NEW grays. The appeared in some 2003 sets like:

The earliest known, to me, instance of new greys in a pre-2004 set is here, a 2002 blister pack I got from a LEGO event:
