Fully functional minifig Catapult

Post by justin2576 »

Hi,

This is my first post to Classic Castle.com. I recently found out about it from a fellow SEALUG member at NWBrickCON 2005. Some of my work is on Brickshelf under the name justin2576, or on my webpage

Anyway, here is my catapult
Image

Most of the catapults I have seen were either too large for minifigs or were made all out of technic beams and didn't look very medieval. I designed mine to be very compact, so that it could be still used by minifigs, yet still be able to work.

Some features of the catapult:
+crank that fits minifig hands and is geared down to pull back the firing arm.

+ There is a locking mechanism with a trigger that holds the arm back so ammunition may be loaded.

+ Height and distance may be adjusted as well as arc height and length.

Even though it is a very small catapult it is still very powerful. It can easily launch a stone over my castle keep

Image

The best feature is that the catapult fires in such a way that the arm does not hit the cross bar at the top, but rather part of the firing mechanism hits the section at the front. This basically means that the catapult will not fall apart after repeated use. It actually can survive hours of play from kids without any of the parts becoming loose!

Anyway, I hope you like it.

Justin! Fantasic that you finally came to visit!

That wasn't the catapult at NWBC, was it? Might have been fun to use it in the Castle/Space invasion. ;)

Welcome, fellow Northwesterner! I think we've all admired your micro MOCs on Brickshelf, and your catapult is great. I especially like the last two pictures on the page you linked to.

Welcome... The catapult is a wonerful design (as are many things in your brickshelf folder). I particularly like the various projectiles! The figs are well posed for the pics as well...

Thanks for sharing, hope to see more soon,

and of course,

God Bless,

Yes it is the same catapult that I had at NWBrickCON 2005. I called it "The Prisoner Exchange Program" because I frequently launch enemy minifigs with it.
I will be working on a large Trebuchet -sp? next. I just need to find more train weights for the counterweight.

P.S. my webpage frequently breaks-down so here is a link to the pictures on brickshelf if it is currently not working:

Hey Justin,

Welcome to CC. Even though you've not been around, we've all enjoyed your microscale work and your keep here in the past. Great catapult. I particularly like the prisoner exchange photo.

Very cool! :D
I always been trying to make smaller scale functionable siege weapons. Good to know it can be done at that size. Love the exchange program and the keg of dynamite photos.

P.S. Can I get some closer shots of how it functions? Please! :) So I can make my own version.

Hello!

That's cool indeed. I like how the looks add to the functionality and the other way around. And the several projectiles are funny.

That is pretty creative. I like the prisoner exchange idea.

Don't forget not only could it launch nukes, it could launch pleg rats.

Justin, I loved ALL your stuff at Brickcon! Loved the castle arrow loops (even though they're backwards!), the catapult (coulda used it Sunday morning to help repel the space invaders), but most of all, it was YOUR micro stuff that has got me jonesin' to do something in that scale. Thanks for posting.

(Also loved the Missouri, the Venus mosaic, and of course Homer and the gang!)

First off, welcome to CC. Second, and more importantly, great catapult. I have three questions though.

1. Is the mechanism based off a real catapult?

2. How did you get the design?

3. Are we going to see any pics on the hidden workings?

Again, awesome catapult.
