Weekly Set Review: Smuggler's Hayride

It's been asked time and again, but why didn't Lego do more peasant sets? This thing rocks! If Lego ever brought this back, I'd buy countless numbers. Black cowl, black plumes, pitchfork, wagon wheels, a horse... what more could you want from a small set?

Great set! Probably my favorite cart/wagon set. Peasant, forestman, pitchfork, hidden treasure, who could ask for more?

I would also love to have a few of these if they were available now, although nowadays I wonder if they would come up with a special brick for the hay, it doesn't seem like they leave this much up to the imagination anymore. Of course if they did, then we could have a lively discussion about whether it's a good thing or a bad thing!

The set has good fig accessories and it's one of those sets looking into the lifestyle of the time (perhaps smuggling was more common than we know! )

I give it a 9/10 for being a great set I would certainly want, but not a full 10 since the cart design could use a bit of work IMHO.

Overall, this is a pretty decent model. I'm not big on the fence itself, but the figures were nice. The pitchfork seems to be a popular item with alot of builders arround here. The real problem is that I'm not too big on the other two models. The spaceship and the helecopter really didn't excite me.

The problem with these "Bonus Packs" was that many of the models were sub-standard. 1974's Castle component wasn't too bad, however the other models seemed somewhat lacking.

Wow , I thought i've seen them all, I do not remember this set...

Very cool..I wonder if the side rails were meant to resemble steel or wood? For peasants, i'd assume wood, but it doesn't have the look of wood sides.


edit: tried an ebay search, since I now would like to own this...but nothing...must be quite rare.

I missed this review the first time around...

I've wanted this for awhile now... This is one of those sets that is not so easy to find, and not easy to find at all for a cheap price (although I do wonder if you could just buy the bricks to make it at home).

It's a great idea for a set - and it adds a lot of the "Robin Hood" spirit to the forestmen. I always pictured this cart going into the Kings Castle (expanded with modules) and sneaking back out a bit later with nothing but a cart of smiling folk on top...

A great set, solid, creative, cheap (at the time!).

EDIT>> Oh, a note about the high fences... this is actually accurate - hay wagons must have high fences because the bales are light but bulky... in order to "maximize" your wagons pulling capacity (I need to take a study break), you should build high fences.

I always thought this set was cool, although I don't own it. The fences do look a little goofy, but I think it captures the idea well. Hay wagons are tall and this set really resembles them. The pesent and pitchfork also boost it up a couple notches in my book. Overall a good set, and worthy of inclusion in a castle scene as is.

What a set. Like all those made back then, or at least most, it is terrific. But it is not just the pieces that make it so nice. Certainally a pitchfork, peasant, Black-feathered forestman, and black horse are all great things about the set, but the real quality is in the set's concept.

Think about it. The set looks like the peasant is smuggling some treasure for the Forestmen. That in itself is a sweet idea, but the fact that we do not know for certain makes it all the better. Sadly, Lego no longer makes set with such possiblities in the play. At least not without breaking the "storyline".

The design is also another great part. The whole thing looks very haycartish, and the use of those spacish pieces is pretty ingenious.

I like this set, LEGO should make more of this sets. I only dislike the fence pieces.
Overall a good set, with good minifigs.

I haven't even seen this set before and already I like it! Grey tunic body looks pretty nice. Is this the only set that comes with a black plume?! Well, I think it'd be a good buy.

Smuggler's cart? What are they smuggling? It seems to me treasure is hardly worth smuggling from the Forestman I assume is the peasant's ally; seeing as Mr. Peasant isn't using the pitchfork on the Forestman .

This set only makes you wish for more civilian sets. The black plumes are found in some other sets though not many like Castle Guard (6035) and camouflaged outpost (6066)
