How to come by old sets?

Post by BlackVrabac »

Hello guys

Looking at some things on classic-castle "out of production" pages, I suddenly felt a great urge to make an unbelievably good looking castle. After 10 (ten) years of inactivity. Well, I did my best. :)

So, I made something out of the parts I have (Black Monarch's Castle, King's Mountain Fortress, Knight's Stronghold and some more). Anyhow, I managed to come by a rather nice looking scene (I must again give credit to this web site, looking at the ancient "blacksmit shop" and "armor shop" images here I managed to make some extra attachable wall sections out of the scarce resources that were left after making the main castle), but it would be so much more if I had the bloody parts... I can't say the problem is in loosing parts, they might have been out of sight for 10 years, but it's not like they have wings or legs and when I opened the boxes, they were still there (at least 99% of them). The problem is that my wishes and my resources just don't go together.

So I'd like to know: Where can I (and can I at all) get the old (I mean OLD, like from the beginning to the early 90es) castle sets? I would really make good use of more 1x1, 2x1, 3x1 etc parts, various arches, wall and wall corner sections, doors, old weapons and armour and all those things that could be found there. Not to mention that I would kill to get my hands on Black Falcon's Fortress or Guarded Inn just for the set's sake. :D

Bricklink

There you should find about everything you could ever want... Ebay can be useful too but less reliable...

Yes, Maedhros is right. Bricklink and ebay are your best bets. Unfortunately you'll find most ebay auctions to be void of any good sets after Christmas shopping. WELCOME TO CC!

Hello and welcome to Classic-Castle. The previous suggestions were good. Shop around on eBay to find classic sets with good prices. Buying parts alone is usually more affordable on bricklink. This thread should belong in the Buy/Sell/Trades forum so I will move it there.

Ha ha ha - poor Maedhros -

Yes, Bricklink and E-bay... E-bay tends to have the old sets, while bricklink is the best place to go for old parts, bricks and figs... (I think) be prepared to pay for your new bricks if you use E-bay. When I first started collecting I thought the price of such sets might have gone down over the years - boy was I wrong. LEGO seems to be one toy that knows no depreciation. Bricklink is a bit better for finding a deal.

Yeah, yeah, as everybody says, those two sites are the best. I prefer Ebay, since the way I buy is cheaper than shopping on Bricklink.

I usually just buy a several-thousand-piece lot, and sort out sets from that. Peeron.com is incredible with the sorting. So...if you want to try that, good luck, but the more you know about Lego, the easier sorting is. (Sets usually aren't complete either, so I generally buy more for the pieces. Plus, some people can tell what sets are in the lot, so the older the set, the higher the price.)

That might not be the best advice for someone in Croatia... I don't know what shipping would be, since most Ebay people are in the US.

I hope that wasn't too confusing...

Welcome to the hobby!

Thanks for all the answers. Took a look at the Bricklink, even found Guarded Inn. :) 99$ tough. :( Oh well. Yes, prices certainly DON'T go down with years. :D

Yes, sorry, didn't see this forum.

Hehehe, thanks. It's more like a comeback. Funny feeling, I wish I was 15 years younger, than I would play with it. This way I just sit and look at it. The good thing is that by sitting and looking I can't break the weapons and shields which was a regular occurance in my old violent-battles-and-tournaments days

Buy from thrift stores, garage sales, ebay, bricklink, and pretty much any other place possible.

Actually, I find that you're more likely to find a deal on eBay than Bricklink. Bricklink sellers generally know their products, so they will price them accordingly.

On eBay, however, some sellers are just getting rid of collections that their college-aged kids have left behind. If you're lucky, you can come across poorly described items, or auctions with bad-quality pictures, and come out with a good set at a decent price (usually with a Buy It Now!). However, the condition of old sets on eBay can be questionable...

Your mileage may vary!
