Jojo's Torii

Post by Dunechaser »

I don't want to steal Jojo's thunder, but this is too good to pass up:

Image

Check out Jojo's use of red 1x1 slopes, SNOT everywhere, and a beautifully curved top bar on the torii. (Torii are gates to Japanese Shinto shrines.)

Gorgeous...

Uberly cool dude....
I am not much of a builder and its lingo, so please forgive me of asking a noobish question, what does SNOT stands for?

Studs Not On Top, basically any technique that utilizes bricks in any orientation other than rightside up. Are the plural of torii usually out in the water like that? Very cool.

That is beautiful! Though I have never seen one in the water before. Once again, Jojo's technique is perfect, I love all that SNOT work. Why can't he post something really bad once in a while just to make the rest of us feel better...:)

Very, very nice.

Itsukushima Shrine has probably the most famous of the above-water torii.
I wonder what his temple will looks like.

Exquisite! Simply elegant design, I looked for a long time for something wrong with it, and I can't find any...! If he plans to make more of the shrine I can't wait.

BTW if I am not mistaken those red droid (R2) bodies are not available in any set. Just another one of those parts I guess.

I think Nelson is correct in identifying Itsukushima Shrine as the source of Jojo's inspiration:

Oh wow! I actually stood under the Itsukushima Torii gate at low tide, back in 1994. It's located at Miyajima Island, and I must say that the entire island looks and feels like something out of a dream.

This brings back some wonderful memories for me. Great build!

This is a very well-done recreation in LEGO... once I saw the original, I appreciated the MOC all that much more. All those small, detailed pieces, especially on top, show a lot of thought into the process... I've never seen a Jojo asian MOC - I wonder what made him chose this shrine?

I don't have much to add, as my feelings are the same as everyone elses, but I just want to add my voice to the "Jojo rocks" chorus. Everything about this MOC is perfect.

I can't believe I haven't replied already, guess I thought I had. :?

This is an awesome MOC. I really like it. It looks so much like the real thing it's freaky; though it could use a few more details, such as the characters on the vertical piece in the center.

Learning French.

Say it "ESS-MICK-GIN-ISS", with a hard "G", as in "get".

I admit I'm a sucker for Asian stuff, so it really doesn't take much to please me. That being said, this MOC doesn't just please me, it blew my socks off. (Good thing it's warm in here or my feet would be cold). The way Jojo recreated the original is fantastic, especially since it took that much SNOT work to make it look smooth. Wow, he really makes it look effortless, then when I start looking at the details I realize how much thought went into it.
